UNC Wilmington's nursing programs, from Alabama
Alabama has two rules for nursing students from programs based elsewhere. Advanced practice and prelicensure programs file a letter of intent before any clinical in the state, and post-licensure students hold an Alabama or multistate license. For UNCW, the first rule rarely comes into play, because NP clinicals happen in North Carolina; the second shapes every educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP plan.

What the Alabama Board of Nursing asks of outside programs
- Letter of intent: Alabama rule 610-X-3-.09 tells any prelicensure or APRN program headquartered in another state to file its intent, with supporting papers, no later than 15 days ahead of clinical learning in Alabama. The filing identifies each student and license, the supervising clinician and license and the facility, along with a statement from that facility's nursing leader. An annual out-of-state program fee comes on top, and its students stay out of Alabama clinicals until the Board approves and the fee is paid.
- Student licenses: RN-BSN, MSN, DNP and other post-licensure students who complete clinical experiences in Alabama carry either an unencumbered Alabama RN license or a party state's multistate license.
- Faculty licenses: an instructor whose teaching reaches students in Alabama beyond 30 days in a calendar year needs an active Alabama or multistate RN license.
The letter-of-intent rule is written for prelicensure and advanced practice programs. UNCW's advanced practice students train in North Carolina, so for most UNCW students in Alabama the license rule is the one that counts.

Is UNCW on file with the Alabama Board?
Nobody outside UNCW can say from public records. The Board's distance-education pages offer forms but no published list of outside programs it has cleared, so UNCW's Alabama status is simply not public.
Before enrolling in an online UNCW program with an Alabama practicum in mind, ask UNCW's School of Nursing whether Alabama clinical experiences for your program need any filing. Practice rules and health systems in Alabama
Alabama's compact membership began January 1, 2020, two years after Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. AANP calls Alabama a reduced practice state. Every NP there needs a collaborative arrangement with a physician that the state regulates, and NP practice answers to two boards at once, nursing and medical examiners.
For an educator practicum or leadership project, examples of settings include Baptist Health in Montgomery, Infirmary Health and USA Health in Mobile, Huntsville Hospital Health System and UAB Medicine. Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery are the main metros. Each site still needs UNCW's approval.
Alabama's preceptor tax credit, run through the Alabama Statewide AHEC office, rewards community preceptors in underserved rural areas, but only for rotations serving programs physically located in Alabama. A UNCW rotation does not qualify.
NP clinicals: North Carolina, not Alabama
UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students do their practicum hours in North Carolina, under preceptors who practice in the state, whatever state they call home. The North Carolina clinical rule page has UNCW's exact wording. Your Alabama multistate license satisfies the compact option in UNCW's admission language; the travel is the part to plan, and UNCW counts none of it as clinical time.

Questions UNCW students ask
Must UNCW file a letter of intent before my Alabama educator practicum?
The rule is written for prelicensure and advanced practice programs, and the MSN Nurse Educator is neither. For post-licensure students, Alabama instead requires an Alabama or multistate RN license during clinical experiences in the state. Ask UNCW's School of Nursing to confirm before you enroll.
Can I use an Alabama preceptor for UNCW's FNP or PMHNP clinicals?
No. UNCW's handbook places every FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical hour in North Carolina, and preceptors must practice or hold licenses there. An Alabama NP or physician cannot sign off those hours, however experienced, so start your North Carolina search early.
Can I take the RN-BSN from Alabama?
Yes. UNCW's RN-BSN takes nurses from most states and asks for a license in the state where you live; Alabama adds that any clinical experience in the state needs an Alabama or multistate license. The practice experiences can fit into the job you already have, with no fixed clinical-hour count.
Would my Alabama preceptor get the state preceptor tax credit?
Not for a UNCW student. Alabama's credit counts only rotations supporting programs physically located in Alabama, and it targets uncompensated community preceptors in medically underserved rural areas. UNCW's own preceptor benefits, listed on its Preceptor's Corner, are the ones that apply.
