UNCW's online MSN Nurse Educator and the practicum you set up
UNCW's MSN Nurse Educator is a 36-credit online degree taught in 7-week courses, with six start dates a year and 186 practicum and practice hours at a site you identify. Cohorts starting in August 2026 follow a new curriculum built around NSG 588 and NSG 589, while students already enrolled finish on NSG 596 and NSG 597. Your preceptor needs a license in the state where the site sits, so distance students can complete the practicum close to home.

Credits, sessions and how long the MSN takes
The MSN is 36 graduate credits delivered fully online. UNCW describes it as accelerated didactic courses paired with individualized practicum experiences, and the graduate application lists it as distance education with faculty-guided practica. UNCW's program materials list no required campus visits; the practicum is the one part that happens in person, on site with your preceptor.
Courses run in 7-week sessions, and you can start in any of six: two in fall, two in spring and two in summer. How long the whole degree takes depends on which UNCW source you read, so treat your plan of study as the deciding document.

Two curricula: August 2026 cohorts and everyone before them
New accreditation standards prompted UNCW to rebuild the Nurse Educator curriculum. It takes effect with the Fall 1 session of August 2026; anyone enrolled before then completes the degree on their original schedule. The student handbook is split the same way, into a Before 8/2026 edition and an After 8/2026 edition, so read the one that matches your start date.

How UNCW reaches 186 practicum hours
The two practicum courses must produce at least 168 hours between them. NSG 510, the advanced health assessment course, contributes 18 more, which is how UNCW arrives at 186. By category, UNCW's MSN preceptor page counts 32 of those as direct care core hours, 136 as functional care core hours and the last 18 as additional practice.
One wrinkle for new-curriculum students: the handbook for August 2026 starters keeps those 18 NSG 510 hours in its total, even though the new course list has no NSG 510. If you start in August 2026 or later, ask your course faculty how those 18 hours are earned before you map out your practicum schedule.
Both practicum courses use the same site, so the setting you choose has to support teaching and learning work in the first course and the work beyond teaching in the second. Who can precept you, and where the site can be
UNCW's educator preceptor profile is specific. Your preceptor holds a current license from the state the practicum site is in and a master's degree or higher from an accredited nursing program, ideally with a nursing education focus. They bring at least three years of teaching in an academic or practice setting, and they work at the site where you log your hours.
Your preceptor mentors you and passes information about your work to course faculty, and faculty assign the grades. Faculty contact each preceptor during the first week of the practicum course, so the person you choose should expect that call.
Because the license rule follows the site's state, the educator practicum is open beyond North Carolina, unlike UNCW's nurse practitioner clinicals. A few states keep their own approval lists for out-of-state programs, and the guide to UNCW online programs outside North Carolina shows where that matters.
The five-week approval and your clearance file
The site and preceptor are yours to find, with guidance from faculty and the School of Nursing's Clinical Placement Team. Approval comes from the program coordinator, and UNCW draws a firm line for it.

Your clearance runs in parallel through Certiphi, with accounts opened roughly three months ahead of the practicum. The handbook is blunt about it: a missed deadline means removal from NSG 588. Five weeks is the finish line for approval, not the start of the search. If your chosen site has no agreement with UNCW yet, that paperwork must also be complete by then.
Your license, grades and the five-year limit
Admission expects an active, non-restricted North Carolina RN license or eligibility for one, with two exceptions. A compact license works when the compact state is your primary residence. And a distance-based student who stays out of North Carolina practice during the program may rely on a home-state license. The RN license guide compares this with the stricter rule for NP students.
Grades follow the graduate standard for this program: a B or better in each required course, a cumulative 3.0, and one course that may be repeated once. The catalog gives you five years from first registration to finish, which leaves room for a part-time pace but not an open-ended one.
UNCW also notes that the degree lets nurse educators in North Carolina meet the North Carolina Board of Nursing's requirements, a point worth knowing if you plan to teach in the state.

Questions UNCW students ask
Can I complete the UNCW nurse educator practicum in another state?
Yes, based on UNCW's published rules. The educator practicum ties the preceptor's license to the state where the site is, rather than to North Carolina. Check two things first: that your own RN license fits UNCW's admission rule for distance students, and that your state keeps no approval list UNCW is missing from. Washington and Wisconsin, for example, publish lists that do not show UNCW.
Can my practicum site be the hospital or school where I work?
UNCW requires your preceptor to be employed at the practicum site, and its published rules say nothing either way about that site also being your employer. Ask the program coordinator before you build a plan around your workplace, and make sure the preceptor you have in mind meets the degree and teaching-experience rules.
When should I start looking for a nurse educator preceptor?
Start at least a semester before your first practicum course. Certiphi accounts open about three months ahead, and the site, preceptor and signed agreement must all be cleared five weeks before NSG 588 begins. On the full-time plan for August 2026 starters, the practicum falls in sessions 7 and 8, so your search should be underway by the middle of the program.
Does a UNCW MSN Nurse Educator preceptor need to be a nurse practitioner?
No. UNCW looks for a nurse educator, not a provider. The preceptor needs a master's degree or higher from an accredited nursing program, preferably in nursing education, three or more years as a teacher, licensure in the state where the site operates, and employment there. Credentials such as NC Approval to Practice belong to UNCW's DNP clinicals, not this practicum.
What happens if I miss the compliance deadline before NSG 588?
The After 8/2026 handbook says failure to meet the published deadline results in removal from NSG 588. Because the practicum courses sit at the end of the program, losing that session can push your graduation back. Set up your Certiphi account as soon as the invitation arrives, about three months before the course, and finish each item early.
