Finding NP preceptors in Wilmington and the Cape Fear region
Wilmington holds most of the Cape Fear region's nurse practitioners, and the four counties around it hold far fewer per resident. That imbalance shapes every local search: Novant Health takes requests from schools, health centers reach the rural towns, and independent practices often hold the best leads. Here is the region county by county, and how we search it.

Five counties, five different searches
The region's NP workforce grew quickly after 2019, but unevenly. New Hanover County alone counts more active nurse practitioners than Brunswick, Pender, Onslow and Columbus combined, and its rate per resident sits well above the statewide figure. Pender has the thinnest supply, and Brunswick remains under the state rate even after its NP count more than doubled.

Inside New Hanover, the question is which practices have room for a student this semester. In Pender or western Brunswick, it is whether a qualified NP, physician or PA works within a drive you can sustain all semester, and UNCW counts none of that drive toward your hours.
Novant Health NHRMC and the hospital route
Novant Health runs New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, by licensed beds the region's largest hospital, and Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia. Its Scotts Hill Medical Center, on the New Hanover and Pender line, was scheduled to open fully in June 2026.
Novant's placement page puts the school in charge. UNCW files each rotation request in myClinicalExchange no later than 30 days ahead of the start, Novant allows up to 30 days to clear its requirements, and the school needs a letter of agreement plus a yearly certificate of insurance. For advanced practice students, the page now links an APP preceptor request form; 2025 versions said finding the preceptor was the student's and school's job.
Novant also plans to favor a set of priority schools, with names due in the first quarter of 2026. No list is posted as of late September 2026, and UNCW is not named on the page, though UNCW's BSN students rotate at NHRMC and Novant funded scholarships for UNCW students in 2023.
Novant's 30 days is a floor. UNCW's own 8-week deadline lands weeks earlier.
Dosher, Pender Memorial, Onslow Memorial and Columbus Regional
J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport is a 25-bed hospital on the Brunswick coast. Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw pairs 43 general beds with a 43-bed nursing home unit, a setting worth asking about for AGPCNP students who need frail-elderly encounters. Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville, with 154 licensed beds, anchors the western end of the region.
Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, licensed for 162 beds, has run under a UNC Health management agreement since 2019 and is moving to sole UNC Health membership by 2029. Its student page asks for an affiliation agreement before one-on-one internships, with training through the UNC Health Rex entity; affiliation agreements explains UNCW's side. Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune and its seven branch clinics also serve Onslow, but no public policy for civilian NP students turned up, so ask the Clinical Placement Team first.
Practices and community health centers
FNP and AGPCNP practicums center on primary care, so outpatient practices and health centers are where a Cape Fear search usually runs deepest.
- Wilmington Health calls itself the largest independent, physician-owned practice in southeastern North Carolina, with more than 30 specialties since 1971. UNCW's own preceptor profiles feature a clinician there.
- Goshen Medical Center names UNCW among its affiliated schools and runs sites in Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Hampstead, Southport, Whiteville, Chadbourn, Tabor City, Bolton and Jacksonville. The agreement is with Goshen, not the precepting provider, and Goshen charges a monthly placement payment.
- MedNorth Health Center operates three sites in New Hanover County.
- Black River Health Services serves Pender County from Burgaw, Atkinson and Maple Hill.
- Tri County runs sites in Willard, Bolivia, Shallotte and Ocean Isle Beach.
- Cape Fear Clinic in Wilmington cares for Medicaid and uninsured patients.
UNCW's handbook sends any site charge, such as Goshen's, through your UNCW student account and the Clinical Placement Team rather than straight to the site. Paid clinical sites sets out that rule.
Shortage areas and the PMHNP squeeze
Federal shortage designations blanket the region. HRSA's September 2026 file shows primary care shortage areas in all five counties, drawn for low-income populations or whole geographic areas, and mental health shortage areas in all five as well, with Brunswick and Onslow designated county-wide.
That makes PMHNP the tightest search on the coast. The preceptor has to be a PMHNP, a psychiatrist or a psychiatric PA, one student per preceptor per clinical day is the limit, and UNCW does not allow PMHNP students to stay at a single site for the whole program. Expect several sites and a wide radius; PMHNP practicum courses lists what each course asks for.
SEAHEC, the regional AHEC based in Wilmington
The Southeast Area Health Education Center covers New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Columbus and Duplin and is part of Novant Health NHRMC. Its student services staff partner with universities' course directors and clinical coordinators to find teaching sites, and roughly 250 preceptors work with SEAHEC to train medical, NP, pharmacy and PA students. Because those requests come from schools, a UNCW student reaches SEAHEC's network through the Clinical Placement Team.
SEAHEC also rents student apartments, first come, first served, in four places: Wilmington, Burgaw, Whiteville and the Oak Island area, which matters most when a rotation lands an hour or more from home. NC AHEC and clinical rotations covers the housing application. North Carolina's SEAHEC is seahec.net; seahec.org is an Arizona center.
How we search the Cape Fear region for UNCW students
We start from your home base and the drive you can handle on a clinic day, then work outward across county lines, because the right preceptor for a Hampstead student may practice in Wilmington, Burgaw or Jacksonville. Every lead is checked against UNCW's rules before it reaches you: a North Carolina practice, NP preceptors holding NC Approval to Practice plus board certification, a year as a provider, and the patient mix your course requires.

Does Novant Health NHRMC accept UNCW NP students?
Novant's placement page does not name UNCW, and the preferred-schools list it promised for early 2026 had not appeared by late September 2026. The request itself comes from UNCW through myClinicalExchange at least 30 days before the start date, so ask the Clinical Placement Team where Novant stands before you plan a semester around NHRMC.
Which Cape Fear county has the fewest nurse practitioners?
Pender County, with 39 active NPs in 2025, roughly 5.6 per 10,000 residents against a statewide rate near 13.4. Brunswick follows at about 8.1, while New Hanover leads with 509 NPs. Students in Pender or Brunswick usually need a search that reaches toward Wilmington or Jacksonville.
Does SEAHEC cover Jacksonville and Onslow County?
No. SEAHEC's territory runs from New Hanover and Pender west to Columbus, plus Brunswick and Duplin. Onslow County belongs to Eastern AHEC, based in Greenville, which runs its own student housing in Jacksonville. Onslow Memorial Hospital is also moving under UNC Health and handles student training through the UNC Health Rex entity.
Does my preceptor have to be in Wilmington?
No. UNCW requires a North Carolina site, not a Wilmington one, and UNCW's 2024 preceptor profiles show clinicians as far off as Greensboro and Drexel. Pick the site you can reach reliably all semester; NP preceptors across North Carolina covers the systems beyond the coast.
