No preceptor yet for your UNCW practicum
Start with what UNCW already offers: site lists from the Clinical Placement Team, open preceptors posted in Canvas, and the DNP FAQ's advice to look well beyond your own town. When those run dry, the cause is usually how North Carolina's health systems ration student spots, not your effort, and a wider, organized statewide search is the fix.

Try these four moves before you call the search a failure.
- Request the team's site listAsk the Clinical Placement Team for its list; the handbook says lists go out on request. Expect the team to ask which practices you have tried, so log every contact with the date and the reply.
- Watch the Canvas discussion boardsThe team posts available preceptors on its Canvas boards for students to claim. Check them often and move quickly when a posting fits your course.
- Brief the Graduate Clinical CoordinatorName the course and semester, what you have tried and how far you can travel. Ask which North Carolina sites already hold an agreement with UNCW, which is the handbook's own tip for a faster start.
- Redraw your mapThe DNP FAQ tells students to "think broadly" about placement locations, even if that means bunking with relatives or friends who live near a practice. More on that below.
Ask for help while you can still choose. If the Clinical Placement Team hands you a site, UNCW expects a yes, and saying no risks being pulled from the course with your progression suspended.
Think broadly: a bed near the site counts
The point of that FAQ advice is reach. The preceptor you need may practice two hours from home, and a few nights a week with family in Greensboro or a friend in Raleigh can open practices a daily commute never would. UNCW's published preceptor profiles make the same point, with one provider in Greensboro and another in Drexel next to one at Wilmington Health.
Three rules travel with you. Every NP clinical hour must be in North Carolina, as the NC-only rule page explains. Transportation is yours however far the site is, and drive time never counts as clinical time. And the people who house you cannot precept you: UNCW bars family and friends from serving as preceptors, though they can still pass along leads. AHEC community sites and AHEC housing
UNC Wilmington is one of the academic partners on North Carolina AHEC's list, and NC AHEC says it helps train NP and other health students at 1,429 community sites across the state. The catch is the front door. Regional AHEC offices coordinate with a school's clinical coordinators and course directors, so a request comes from UNCW rather than from you. Your route in is a question to the Clinical Placement Team about whether an AHEC-supported community practice could fit your course.
Near Wilmington the regional office is SEAHEC, whose area covers Duplin, Columbus, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover. Onslow County falls under Eastern AHEC, based in Greenville.
Housing is the other AHEC resource worth knowing. Students on community rotations anywhere in the state can apply for short stays through the MyAHEC portal, and AHEC weighs school affiliation, co-ed status, how long you need and when you applied. SEAHEC rents apartments first come, first served in Burgaw, Whiteville, Wilmington and around Oak Island and Caswell, while Eastern AHEC has student housing in Jacksonville. Each region sets its own rules: Piedmont AHEC, for one, requires a site more than 50 miles from campus and caps stays at 90 days. Our NC AHEC guide goes further.
Why North Carolina searches stall
If a dozen calls have gone nowhere, the reason is usually one of these structural walls:
- Preferred-school lists. Novant Health, which runs NHRMC in Wilmington, said it would name priority schools in the first quarter of 2026; by late September no list was public. Cone Health favors brick-and-mortar North Carolina schools and says it has stopped taking students from fully online programs, even while naming UNCW as a partner.
- Ranked queues. UNC Hospitals' APP Center serves its own first: UNC Health employees and UNC-Chapel Hill students rank above other UNC System schools such as UNCW, and it describes primary care and general OB-GYN openings as very limited.
- Agreement freezes. Atrium Health has a moratorium on new clinical education affiliation agreements. UNCW's existing agreement runs to April 2029, so that door stays open for you.
- Psychiatric scarcity. UNCW limits PMHNP medication-management preceptors to psychiatric prescribers, each of whom may host one student per clinical day, and all five Cape Fear counties carry federal mental health shortage designations.
- Volunteer teaching. UNCW rewards preceptors with CE credit and library access rather than a stipend, and the state offers them no tax credit.
- Wrong-fit asks. A yes from a provider without Approval to Practice, board certification or a year as a provider, or one who sees the wrong population for your course, costs weeks. Screen against UNCW's preceptor requirements before you call.
The takeaway: call independent practices, community health centers and sites with a UNCW agreement before the big systems.

Questions UNCW students ask
Will UNCW assign me a preceptor if I cannot find one?
Not as a rule. UNCW's clinical handbook places the search on FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students and describes the Clinical Placement Team's role as site lists and assistance as needed, with no promise of flexibility. If the team does provide a site, you are expected to take it. Treat team help as a backstop and keep your own search moving.
Can I count clinical hours in South Carolina or Virginia if I live near the state line?
No, not as a UNCW NP student. For all three NP tracks, UNCW's DNP Student Handbook keeps every clinical hour inside North Carolina, and preceptors must practice in or hold licenses from the state. If you live near the line, search the nearest North Carolina counties instead; the same approval rules apply there.
Is my own primary care provider worth asking?
Yes. UNCW's handbook names your own primary care provider as a source of leads. They may know colleagues who precept, or be willing themselves if they meet UNCW's credential rules and work in a setting your course needs. Any preceptor still needs Graduate Clinical Coordinator approval before your first clinical hour.
Can a licensed therapist be my only PMHNP preceptor?
No. Licensed therapists, including clinical social workers, professional counselors, clinical psychologists and marriage and family therapists, can supply therapy hours, but medication management has to come from a psychiatric prescriber, and the complex rotation must include one. The handbook's child and adolescent rotation, for example, pairs a primary prescriber placement with a secondary placement for therapy hours.
My practicum starts next semester. Is it too late to search?
Not necessarily. The ideal, per UNCW's process chart, is a search that begins 6 to 12 months out, but what really binds you is submission: 8 weeks ahead of the semester by the handbook's text, 90 days ahead of the course by its chart. If either is near, read need a preceptor fast and act today.
