UNCW PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate: psychiatric practice for DNP-prepared NPs
The PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate is new in UNCW's 2026-27 catalog. It gives nurse practitioners who already hold a DNP a 31-credit route into psychiatric mental health practice, using the same four practica as the DNP PMHNP students, all in North Carolina. Some details, including the plan of study and the certificate's clinical hour total, are not public yet, so this guide keeps what UNCW states apart from what you should confirm.

Who the certificate is for
UNCW describes the certificate as a route for DNP-prepared nurse practitioners from other specialties. Admission calls for a finished DNP, a completed nurse practitioner program, and an RN license without restrictions from North Carolina or a compact state, which is what lets you train at North Carolina sites.
It is the only NP certificate in the 2026-27 graduate catalog. UNCW no longer lists a post-master's FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP certificate, so an NP whose highest degree is a master's reaches psychiatric practice at UNCW through the MSN-DNP pathway of the DNP PMHNP concentration instead. The 31 credits, course by course
There are no DNP core courses and no project courses, since your doctorate already covered both. The ten courses split into 19 credits of psychiatric theory and 12 credits of supervised practice.
Teaching happens online, but UNCW's graduate application also lists a required campus orientation and campus intensive days for this certificate. How many intensives there are, and when, is not yet public.

Clinical hours: what is stated and what is not
UNCW has not published a clinical hour total for the certificate; neither the catalog entry nor the certificate's web page gives one. The certificate uses the same practicum courses as the DNP, and the DNP PMHNP plan of study assigns 187.5 hours to each of them, 750 across the four. That is the best published guide, but it is a DNP figure rather than a certificate rule.
The certificate's plan of study is not public either, so the term in which each practicum falls is unknown. Ask the PMHNP program coordinator, who is the listed contact for the certificate, for both the plan and the hour target before you begin approaching preceptors. Hours from your first NP program are not a substitute for these practica: the catalog lists all four psychiatric practicum courses as required parts of the certificate.
Practicum rules that come with the shared courses
Because the certificate borrows the DNP PMHNP practica, it inherits their rules. Clinical hours take place in North Carolina, as the admission wording sets out and the North Carolina clinical rule explains. For prescribing and medication work, your preceptor is a PMHNP, a psychiatrist or a psychiatry-focused PA; therapy hours can sit with licensed clinical social workers, professional counselors, clinical psychologists, marriage and family therapists or mental health counselors.
Three further rules matter to experienced clinicians. The practicum courses may not be repeated. PMHNP students may not complete the entire sequence at a single site. And the Fall 2025 clinical handbook keeps your hours out of the department that employs you, which is worth checking early if your current practice sits alongside psychiatric providers. The DNP clinical handbook sets the day-to-day rules for these same courses: no clinical hours before course orientation and the Graduate Clinical Coordinator's approval, encounters logged in Typhon within 5 days, and every hour finished before the last day of classes. Expect those rules to follow the courses into the certificate, and confirm any differences with your program coordinator.
Getting ready before the first practicum
- Confirm your licenseKeep an unrestricted North Carolina RN license, or a compact license that covers practice in North Carolina, active through every practicum.
- Ask for the plan and the hour targetRequest the term-by-term plan and the certificate's clinical hour total from the PMHNP program coordinator, since UNCW has not published either.
- Clear compliance earlyDNP students finish a background check, a 12-panel drug test, immunizations and other items in Certiphi or Castle Branch by July 15. Ask which version applies to certificate students; the compliance guide lists each item.
- Search 6 to 12 months aheadUNCW's placement map uses that window for DNP placements. Placement details are due at least 8 weeks before the semester, or 90 days before the course on the handbook's chart.
- Plan a different site for each stageSketch the sequence early: inpatient and outpatient exposure, a psychiatric prescriber, and a licensed therapist for any course with therapy hours.

Is the UNCW PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate new?
Yes. It appears in the 2026-27 graduate catalog and was not in the 2025-26 list. UNCW is admitting a Fall 2027 cohort through an application that opened on 09/01/2026 and closes on 03/01/2027. Because the program is new, details such as the plan of study and the certificate's total clinical hours have not been published.
Can I apply to the PMHNP certificate with an MSN?
Not to the certificate. Admission requires a DNP as well as completion of a nurse practitioner program. MSN-prepared NPs in another specialty can reach psychiatric practice through the MSN-DNP pathway of UNCW's DNP PMHNP concentration, which is 64 credits and ends with a doctorate rather than a certificate.
Is the PMHNP certificate fully online?
Not entirely. Courses run online, though the application lists a required orientation and intensive days on campus in Wilmington. The four practica are also in person, at North Carolina clinical sites with approved psychiatric preceptors. UNCW has not published how many intensives there are or when they happen.
Does the PMHNP certificate include a DNP project?
No. The certificate's 31 credits are the six psychiatric courses and the four practica. There are no DNP core courses and no project courses, because every applicant already holds a DNP, so your time goes to psychiatric theory and supervised clinical practice.
Who do I contact about the PMHNP certificate?
UNCW lists the PMHNP program coordinator, who also leads the DNP PMHNP concentration, as the contact for the certificate. The same role approves PMHNP preceptors and sites. In the DNP, placement packets go to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator and the Clinical Placement Team for review before hours begin; ask whether certificate students follow the same route.
