UNCW placement help or your own search: which route fits you
UNCW nurse practitioner students have three realistic routes to a preceptor: run the search yourself, lean on the Clinical Placement Team's lists and offers, or bring in a placement service. Any of them can end in an approved placement. They differ in who does the outreach, how much say you keep over the site, and what happens when a plan falls apart.

Route one: run the search yourself
UNCW's handbook hands students a practical toolkit. Join local and state NP associations, put a specific request out on LinkedIn, through Sigma or on social media, ask people you know in health care (your own primary care provider included) for introductions, call local practices directly, and target North Carolina practices that already have a UNCW affiliation agreement on file, confirming each with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator. Relatives and friends can open doors but may not serve as your preceptor.
Your nursing network is often the richest seam, since UNCW wants 600 hours of nursing work behind you before the first practicum and colleagues know the NPs nearby. NC AHEC supports teaching at community practices statewide, including through SEAHEC in Wilmington, but it takes placement requests from schools' clinical coordinators rather than students, so an AHEC-connected practice is a lead to raise with UNCW. Route two: lean on the Clinical Placement Team
UNCW's Clinical Placement Team hands out site lists on request, uses Canvas discussion boards to announce preceptors students can claim, and advises on possible new sites. It also asks which sites you have tried already, so log every contact from day one.
The catch is the acceptance rule. When the team supplies a site, UNCW treats it as yours to accept, and saying no risks being withdrawn from the course with your progression suspended. Getting to the site is on you at any distance, so an offered practice across the state is still yours to reach. Request a site from the Clinical Placement Team only when you can accept whatever it offers; declining an offered site can cost you the course.
Route three: use a placement service
A placement service takes on the outreach, matching and paperwork. Which route fits your situation
Match the route to your circumstances rather than to a general rule:
- Search alone if you have a strong local network, a flexible schedule and a term that is still many months away.
- Ask the Clinical Placement Team if you can travel anywhere in North Carolina and are ready to accept the first site offered.
- Use a placement service if you work full time, need a specific region or specialty, or have a submission deadline approaching.
- Combine routes if you already hold a few leads: share them with your placement advisor so outreach picks up where you left off.

Questions UNCW students ask
Can I ask the Clinical Placement Team for help and use a placement service at the same time?
You can, but keep both sides informed. If the team offers you a site, UNCW expects you to take it, and your advisor then shifts the search to your next course. Telling your placement advisor what you have requested from UNCW keeps you from holding two commitments for one practicum.
Does UNCW review a preceptor found by a service any differently?
No. Every preceptor goes through the same Clinical Placement Packet and the same review by the Graduate Clinical Coordinator, however the match was made. What a strong service changes is the quality of what arrives: a CV with the right dates, the correct license number and complete agency details.
I have already contacted a dozen offices. Is that work wasted?
Not at all. UNCW asks students for the list of sites they have contacted, so your log already has a use. Shared with a placement advisor, it also shows which practices have said no, which went quiet and which asked for more information, so the next round of outreach starts from where you stopped.
When should I decide which route to take?
Before your search window opens. UNCW's process map puts the start of your search half a year to a year out from the course, and each route needs time to work. Deciding early leaves room to switch routes if the first one stalls, without running into the submission deadline.
