Colorado residents in UNC Wilmington nursing programs
As far as its written rules show, Colorado asks nothing of out-of-state RN-BSN or graduate nursing programs before their students work in the state. So a Denver or Fort Collins nurse in a UNCW educator, RN-BSN or leadership doctoral program can likely keep the hands-on part local. The NP concentrations break the pattern, because UNCW sends every one of their clinical hours to North Carolina.

Four questions to settle before enrolling from Colorado
- Which UNCW program fits?Five UNCW programs can keep their hands-on work in Colorado: the educator MSN, the educator certificate, the RN-BSN and the two leadership doctorates (Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership). The three NP concentrations and the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate cannot.
- Does your license work?Colorado issues multistate licenses under the Nurse Licensure Compact. With Colorado as your primary residence, that license meets UNCW's North Carolina or compact wording for NP and leadership DNP students, and the educator programs accept it too.
- Does Colorado need to approve UNCW?The Board's written rules set no such step for RN-BSN or graduate schools based elsewhere. Its website was unreachable when this guide was checked, so get UNCW's confirmation before you enroll.
- Who could precept an educator practicum?For the educator MSN, UNCW looks for someone who works at the practicum site, holds a Colorado license, earned at least a master's, and has taught for three years or longer.
What Colorado's board rules say about programs from elsewhere
Colorado's nursing board sits in DORA, the state's regulatory department, within its professions division. Under Rule 1.2 of its nursing rules (3 CCR 716-1), the programs the Board approves are basic courses that prepare people for a first RN or LPN license. Graduate and RN-BSN schools from other states meet no approval or notice requirement in that text.
Two caveats apply. The Board's website would not load when this guide was checked, so any guidance posted there beyond the rules is unverified. Colorado's student permit is also narrow: it exists for people from nontraditional programs that lacked supervised clinicals and who need in-state hours to become licensed, and it is not a placement permit for UNCW students.
Full practice with a mentorship condition, and a preceptor credit
AANP places Colorado in its full practice group. The catch comes with prescribing: a new NP attests to 750 hours in a mentoring agreement with a physician or APRN before receiving prescriptive authority. Colorado nurses have held multistate licenses since the compact took effect there in January 2018, and the state has not enacted the APRN Compact.
The state also gives an income tax credit to preceptors who teach unpaid in rural and frontier shortage areas. HB22-1005 (2022) opened it to RNs and other licensed outpatient clinicians and extended it through tax years beginning before 2033. The same bill restricted it to students of accredited Colorado schools, which leaves a UNCW student's preceptor outside it.
Front Range settings for educator, RN-BSN and DNP work
Most Coloradans live along the Front Range: metro Denver first, then Colorado Springs, with Fort Collins-Loveland and Greeley to the north. UCHealth, Denver Health and HCA HealthONE are major employers there, along with CommonSpirit's Colorado hospitals and Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, which Intermountain Health runs. They could host a teaching practicum or RN-BSN project; none is a named UNCW partner.
Leadership DNP students often stay in their own building. UNCW's clinical overview says most of them earn immersion hours at the place they already work, once the employer signs a letter of agreement with the university. The immersion hours guide explains what counts.
If you are an NP student living in Colorado
Family, adult-gerontology and psychiatric NP students at UNCW log all of their clinical time in North Carolina under preceptors based in the state; the 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook allows no other location. A Colorado multistate license covers the work itself, so the real cost is getting there: UNCW leaves transportation to the student however far the site, and hours spent on the road are not clinical hours. Do I need Colorado Board approval for a UNCW practicum?
Nothing in Colorado's written nursing rules requires it. The Board approves basic programs leading to a first license, and the text is silent on RN-BSN and graduate schools from other states. The Board's own website could not be opened for this guide, so ask UNCW to confirm before you choose a site.
Will my Colorado preceptor get the state preceptor tax credit?
Unlikely. Since 2022 the rural and frontier credit has been limited to preceptors teaching students of accredited Colorado colleges and universities. UNCW is a North Carolina school, so precepting a UNCW educator or RN-BSN student does not appear to earn it, whatever the county.
Can I do my UNCW NP clinicals in Denver?
No. A Denver clinic, however good, sits outside the only state where UNCW lets its NP students earn clinical hours, and the preceptor has to practice in North Carolina as well. You can live in Colorado and study online, then spend each practicum period in North Carolina.
Does Colorado's 750-hour mentorship rule affect me as a student?
Not while you are in school. It applies once you hold NP licensure, when Colorado ties prescriptive authority to 750 attested hours in a mentoring agreement with a physician or APRN. It matters only if you plan to practice in Colorado after graduating.
