Maine nurses can take five UNCW programs without moving their hands-on work south: the online MSN Nurse Educator, its post-graduate certificate, the RN-BSN, and two leadership doctorates, Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership. Maine has issued multistate licenses since January 2018. The nurse practitioner concentrations differ: every hour of their clinical work is logged in North Carolina.

Licensing and practice in Maine
The Maine State Board of Nursing licenses the state's nurses. Since January 19, 2018, Maine has issued multistate licenses under the Nurse Licensure Compact, and one of those counts as a compact license in UNCW's sense. That matters in three places: the NP concentrations and both leadership doctorates want an RN license from North Carolina or from any compact state, and the MSN lets a distance student use the compact license of the state they call home.
AANP classes Maine as full practice, with a two-year runway: a new nurse practitioner practices for 24 months under the oversight of a physician or an experienced NP, or works for a practice whose medical director is a physician. Maine has not enacted the APRN Compact.
Does Maine ask UNCW to register first?
No Maine rule was found that makes a program based elsewhere obtain permission before its students train in the state. Chapter 7, the board's education rule, governs approval of Maine's own prelicensure programs and has no provisions for visiting ones, and nothing on the board's education pages addresses the subject.
One nuance is worth knowing. Maine's licensing exemption for students covers board-approved programs leading to initial licensure, so it is written for prelicensure students. As a working RN in a UNCW graduate or RN-BSN program, plan on practicing under your own Maine or multistate license, and confirm your plans with UNCW before you enroll; the state authorization page explains SARA.
Where an educator practicum or DNP project could fit
Four networks carry much of Maine's care: Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health and MaineHealth. Portland-South Portland is the largest metro, with about 578,000 residents in 2025, ahead of Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn. Treat these as examples of where staff educators and clinical leaders work, not a list of UNCW sites.
MSN students stay at a single educational site through both practicum courses, working beside a nurse educator on that site's staff who holds a graduate degree and has taught for three years or more; the nurse educator practicum guide covers hours and timing. Leadership doctoral students more often build the DNP project where they already work, which UNCW formalizes through a letter of agreement with the employer.
If you want an NP concentration
For the family, adult-gerontology and psychiatric NP concentrations, UNCW's 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook allows clinical hours inside North Carolina and nowhere else, under North Carolina preceptors; the PMHNP post-doctoral certificate is built on those same practica. From Maine, that means spending each practicum semester far from home, with transport and lodging at your own cost and travel time left off your hours. Questions UNCW students ask
Is a Maine school or hospital a valid site for the UNCW educator practicum?
It can be. UNCW ties the educator preceptor's license to wherever the practicum takes place, so a Maine school, hospital education department or practice setting qualifies if the rest lines up: a preceptor on staff there with a graduate degree and three years of teaching, plus UNCW's sign-off and an executed agreement five weeks before the first practicum course.
Does a Maine multistate license meet UNCW's NP license rule?
Yes. UNCW's NP admission wording lets you hold either a North Carolina RN license or a multistate one from a compact state, and Maine has been part of the compact since January 2018. The license does not move the clinicals, though: every FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP hour is still earned at North Carolina sites under North Carolina preceptors.
Do I need Maine board approval for UNCW RN-BSN practice experiences?
No Maine requirement for outside programs to seek approval before placing students turned up, and Maine's education rule covers its own prelicensure programs. RN-BSN practice experiences have no set clinical hours and can happen at your current job. Confirm with UNCW's state authorization office before a course begins.
What if I move from Maine partway through a UNCW program?
Relocation mid-program is not covered by any published UNCW policy. For educator, RN-BSN and leadership doctoral students, the practicum or project travels with your license, so a move means a new site and possibly a new license. NP students keep North Carolina as their clinical location either way. Tell your advisor early and check the license rule for your new state.
