Tennessee is the neighboring state that calls for the most careful planning. A 2026 bill directs its Board of Nursing to stop approving out-of-state programs for two years, and UNCW's current standing there could not be confirmed. UNCW's nurse practitioner students feel none of this, since their clinicals happen in North Carolina; online students hoping to do a practicum at home should ask first.

Tennessee's moratorium, point by point
Senate Bill 2013 and its House twin, 1905, carry the short title Tennessee Nursing Education Integrity and Oversight Act. Together they add sections 63-7-501 through 63-7-506 to the Tennessee Code. Four of its provisions bear on a UNCW student.
- For two years the Board takes no new applications from nursing programs based beyond Tennessee's borders, whether a program hopes to run there, sign up Tennessee residents or send learners to Tennessee clinical sites.
- The pause covers every program headquartered elsewhere; prelicensure, RN-BSN and APRN programs are treated alike.
- Outside programs already approved hold on to that status, though the Board can demand their data, preceptor lists and placement statistics included.
- By June 30, 2027, the state's Center for Nursing Advancement is due to recommend fresh standards for outside programs that lean on Tennessee preceptors or clinical sites.
Its effective date is the day it becomes law. One secondary report gives April 27, 2026, though the official enactment record was not available to confirm it, and research turned up no existing Board rule that expressly makes outside programs seek approval before placing a student. The bill's own findings say many outside programs have been placing students in Tennessee without enough oversight.
Where UNCW stands in Tennessee: unknown
Nobody can say from public records today whether UNCW holds Tennessee approval. The state's site refused access when this was researched, and the only reachable list, a November 2017 roster of approved professional nursing schools, leaves UNCW off but is too old to settle anything.
Two more open questions follow. It is unclear whether Tennessee's rules reach a nurse educator practicum in a classroom rather than a clinical unit, and UNCW has published nothing about Tennessee placements.
So if a Tennessee practicum is part of your plan, raise it with UNCW's School of Nursing and its state authorization office before you enroll, then again before you submit a site. The state authorization guide lists what UNCW publishes and where it stops.

Licensing, practice law and health systems in Tennessee
Tennessee entered the multistate licensing system on January 19, 2018, and a multistate license from Tennessee fits the compact option UNCW accepts for its NP and leadership DNP students. On AANP's map Tennessee is restricted: every NP practices with a supervising physician, and the state caps Schedule II through IV prescribing and opioid quantities.
Nurse educators and leaders here work for systems such as Erlanger, Covenant Health, Ballad Health, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, across the Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville and Memphis metros. Once the approval questions clear, these are the kinds of settings where an educator practicum or leadership project could fit.
The Tennessee Hospital Association runs a grant-funded preceptor incentive for Tennessee or multistate licensed nurses who spend at least 70 hours one-on-one with a student, for as long as funds remain. Eligible students attend Tennessee programs or schools in seven named nearby states, and North Carolina is not among them.
For NP students, the road leads east into North Carolina
Tennessee rules never touch UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP students, because UNCW sends every one of their practicum hours to North Carolina sites and preceptors who practice there. The North Carolina clinical rule page gives the handbook's own words.

Does Tennessee's moratorium affect UNCW FNP students?
Not directly. UNCW requires FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical hours in North Carolina, so a UNCW NP student never places in Tennessee in the first place. The moratorium matters for students in the online programs whose practicum or project could otherwise happen where they live.
Is UNCW on the Tennessee Board of Nursing's approved list?
Unknown. The Board's site could not be reached during research, and the only list found dates from November 2017, which leaves UNCW off but is far too old to rely on. Ask UNCW's School of Nursing for its current Tennessee status before you plan a practicum there.
Can I do my UNCW nurse educator practicum in Nashville?
Possibly, but settle it first. UNCW lets educator students use a preceptor licensed in the practicum's state, yet Tennessee has paused approvals for out-of-state programs and UNCW's standing there is unconfirmed. Get UNCW's go-ahead before you commit to a Nashville site.
Does a Tennessee multistate license work for UNCW's DNP?
Yes, for licensing. UNCW's NP, Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership admission pages accept a North Carolina or compact RN license, and Tennessee is a compact state. Post APRN applicants also need APRN licensure or approval in their state of residence, plus national certification.
Would my Tennessee preceptor qualify for the THA preceptor incentive?
Not for a UNCW student. The program covers preceptors of students in Tennessee programs and in schools from a short list of nearby states, and North Carolina schools are not on that list. Its current term covers hours from August 1 through December 1, 2026.
