Studying with UNCW while living in Wisconsin
Wisconsin's Board of Nursing must sign off on any out-of-state nursing school that trains students in the state, post-licensure bachelor's and graduate programs included. UNC Wilmington was missing from the approved-schools list last modified August 3, 2026, which clouds Wisconsin practicums in UNCW's online programs. NP clinicals are a separate matter, since UNCW keeps them in North Carolina.

What Wisconsin's rule says, and where UNCW stands
The authority is Wis. Admin. Code N 1.06, and DSPS spells it out on Form 3067-OEE (revised April 13, 2026). An out-of-state school needs Board of Nursing approval whether it offers practical nursing, an associate or bachelor's RN degree, or graduate study, and the form singles out post-licensure bachelor's programs. Once approved, a school files a periodic self-evaluation to stay on the list.
Three North Carolina names were on the DSPS roster when it was checked: Duke, East Carolina, and Johnson and Wales's North Carolina campus (state approval pending). UNC Wilmington's name was absent.

What the gap means for the online programs
The RN-BSN sits squarely inside the rule. Its practice experiences have no prescribed hours and often happen at your workplace, yet they are still practice experiences carried out in Wisconsin.
MSN Nurse Educator and certificate students work with a preceptor licensed where the practicum takes place, and Wisconsin adds that anyone precepting a clinical in the state be licensed in Wisconsin or hold the privilege to practice there. Whether the approval rule reaches an educator practicum held in a classroom rather than on a clinical unit is not spelled out.
Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership students complete the DNP project in the state where they are licensed, which for a Wisconsin nurse means Wisconsin. Nursing practice in Wisconsin after September 2026
A Wisconsin multistate RN license, issued since the state implemented the compact in January 2018, meets UNCW's compact-license condition. APRN licensing is the newer story. 2025 Wisconsin Act 17 took effect September 1, 2026, and the state now licenses advanced practice nurses in four roles, from nurse practitioner to nurse-midwife, with old APNP credentials converted.
AANP's map still shows reduced practice, meaning an NP collaborates with a physician, and flags the new law. Act 17 opens a route to practice without that collaboration, but only through its own application and a Board decision. For Post APRN applicants, who need an APRN license or approval where they live, the converted Wisconsin license is what satisfies UNCW.
Madison to Green Bay: examples of settings
Large employers of nurse educators and health leaders in Wisconsin include UW Health, Aspirus Health, Ascension Wisconsin, Froedtert ThedaCare Health and Advocate Health's Aurora Health Care, with most residents in the Madison, Milwaukee-Waukesha, Appleton and Green Bay metros. They illustrate settings rather than UNCW sites, and any of them would need UNCW's agreement once approval is settled.
NP concentrations: clinicals in North Carolina
Wisconsin's list has no bearing on UNCW's nurse practitioner tracks, because those clinicals never leave North Carolina. The 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook requires FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP practicum hours to be completed there, with preceptors practicing in the state, and the PMHNP certificate runs through the same courses. Can I take UNCW's FNP program from Wisconsin?
You can take the online coursework, but under UNCW's 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook every clinical hour takes place in North Carolina with preceptors practicing there. Wisconsin's approval rule does not change that. A Wisconsin multistate license meets UNCW's license condition, and travel and lodging during practicum semesters are yours to arrange.
Does a Wisconsin preceptor need a Wisconsin license?
Yes, according to Wisconsin's out-of-state school form: anyone teaching or precepting a clinical in Wisconsin needs a Wisconsin license or the privilege to practice in Wisconsin. UNCW's rule for nurse educator preceptors, a current license in the state where the practicum site is located, points the same way.
Does Wisconsin's new APRN law affect UNCW Post APRN applicants?
Act 17 moved Wisconsin to APRN licenses on September 1, 2026, converting the older APNP credential. UNCW's Post APRN program asks for an APRN license or approval to practice in your state of residence, so the converted license is what you would show. Because the DNP project would then happen in Wisconsin, the approval question still applies.
