Alaska nurses and UNC Wilmington's online programs
An Alaska RN license is good in Alaska alone, and that one fact decides which UNCW programs fit. The online MSN Nurse Educator, its certificate and the RN-BSN work on an Alaska license, with practice work close to home. The NP concentrations and the leadership DNPs require a license from North Carolina or a compact state, and NP clinicals are a North Carolina-only affair.

Start with the license
Alaska stands outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Board reports two bills to bring it in, House Bill 131 and Senate Bill 124, as pending in the 2025-2026 legislature, but until one becomes law, an Alaska license carries no multistate privilege. The APRN Compact has no Alaska enactment, and AANP places Alaska in the full practice group.
UNCW phrases its license rule differently for each program. The educator MSN and certificate admit a distance student who will not practice in North Carolina and is licensed at home. The RN-BSN wants a license in your resident state. The NP concentrations, the Post APRN DNP and the Nurse Executive Leadership DNP require an unrestricted RN license issued by North Carolina or by a compact member, and Alaska is neither. An Alaska preceptorship registration cannot move UNCW NP hours north
Alaska handles APRN students from outside programs one person at a time. Under 12 AAC 44.460, the student applies for an APRN preceptorship registration on form 08-4253, pays a non-refundable fee, and shows an RN license in good standing, current APRN enrollment and a copy of the four-way agreement among the school, the facility, the preceptor and the student. The registration runs until the preceptorship ends or a year passes, whichever is first, with a single renewal.
UNCW NP students have no use for it. Under the 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook, an FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP student logs clinical and practicum time in North Carolina and nowhere else, under preceptors tied to that state by practice or license; PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate students take the same courses under the same rule. From Alaska, that adds up to a North Carolina RN license, long trips each clinical semester and housing of your own, with travel time left out of your hours. Educator, RN-BSN and project work in Alaska
For RN-to-BS students, the Board's FAQ names two conditions: enrollment in a program holding national accreditation plus approval where it is based, and an RN license, current and unencumbered, issued by a US state or territory. Faculty of an outside program need an Alaska RN license only once their clinical grading, together with any other nursing education they do in Alaska, tops 20 working days within one licensing period, per 12 AAC 44.090(h).
In Anchorage, the tribally operated Alaska Native Medical Center, Alaska Regional Hospital and Providence Alaska Medical Center are major employers; Mat-Su Regional Medical Center serves Palmer, and Foundation Health Partners runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Questions UNCW students ask
Can I apply to UNCW's FNP program with an Alaska RN license?
The NP admission pages set the bar at an unrestricted RN license from North Carolina or a compact member state. Alaska is outside the compact, so an Alaska license alone misses that wording, and a North Carolina license is the direct route. With it, your clinicals would run at North Carolina sites.
Does UNCW's MSN Nurse Educator accept an Alaska license?
Yes, through its route for distance students: a nurse who stays out of North Carolina practice during the program may enroll on a home-state license. An Alaska nurse fits that route, and because the practicum preceptor needs a license where the site is, an Alaska practicum is possible. The nurse educator certificate follows the same route. Confirm with UNCW before enrolling.
Is Alaska joining the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Not so far. Legislation to join, House Bill 131 and Senate Bill 124, was still pending in the 2025-2026 session, the Board says. If Alaska does join, an Alaska multistate license would count as a compact license under UNCW's NP and leadership DNP admission rules. For now, Alaska licenses are single-state.
What if I move to Alaska in the middle of a UNCW program?
UNCW has no published policy for mid-program moves. NP students would keep doing clinical hours in North Carolina on a license valid there. Educator students would need a preceptor licensed in Alaska for an Alaska practicum, and RN-BSN students are asked to hold a license in their resident state. Raise it with your advisor early.
