Studying with UNC Wilmington from Arizona

An APRN program based in another state needs the Arizona board's approval before its students begin clinicals there, and UNCW was missing from the archived copy of that list. For UNCW's NP students the list changes little, because their clinical hours are all completed in North Carolina. Arizona nurses have the most room in the online educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP programs.

Arizona's APRN list and what it covers

The Arizona State Board of Nursing says its oversight covers pre-licensure and APRN programs. An advisory opinion, revised November 2020, has every APRN program from another state apply for approval before a single student starts clinicals in Arizona. A track already approved at home, at a school with national accreditation, gets a lighter review. RN-BSN programs go unmentioned.

UNCW does not appear on the "Approved APRN Nursing Programs" list archived in March 2025, where Duke is the only North Carolina school. When checked in September 2026, the Board's live list would not open, so read the archived copy as a snapshot rather than the final word.

Licenses, practice law and Arizona preceptors

Arizona has been a Nurse Licensure Compact state since January 2018; the APRN Compact has not passed there, and AANP lists Arizona as full practice. Under the Board's opinion, an out-of-state school's APRN student placed in Arizona holds an Arizona or multistate RN license; APRN preceptors pair an Arizona or multistate RN license with Arizona APRN certification; physician preceptors hold an Arizona medical license. Rule R4-19-217 also wants a distance program's supervising clinical faculty to hold a license in the state where students do that work.

The compact is the fact that matters most to a UNCW applicant. A multistate license from Arizona, kept while Arizona is your primary residence, meets the North Carolina or compact license UNCW asks of its NP and leadership DNP students. NC or compact RN license walks through the details.

Phoenix, Tucson and a dormant preceptor grant

Educator and RN-BSN students have big employers to think about. Greater Phoenix has Banner Health, whose Banner - University Medicine hospitals are academic centers, along with HonorHealth, Phoenix Children's and the Mayo Clinic campus; TMC Health anchors Tucson. Those two metros hold most of the state's people, while the Prescott and Lake Havasu City-Kingman areas are far smaller. These are illustrations of practice settings, not places known to take UNCW students.

Arizona also created a preceptor grant for volunteer preceptors of graduate students, APRN students included, with priority for rural primary care. The legislature's latest budget report lists nothing for it in fiscal years 2026 and 2027, so the program appears to be idle.

Coursework in Arizona, clinicals in North Carolina

UNCW's DNP handbook keeps FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical and practicum hours inside North Carolina, with preceptors who practice there. From Arizona, each practicum becomes a stay in North Carolina: transport and housing are your responsibility, and time on the road does not count toward hours. Orientation and the on-campus intensives happen in Wilmington as well. The North Carolina clinical rule quotes the handbook.

Questions UNCW students ask

Is UNCW an approved APRN program in Arizona?

It was not on the Arizona Board's archived list of approved APRN programs from March 2025, and the current list could not be opened in September 2026. For UNCW's NP concentrations this has little practical effect, since UNCW requires their clinical hours in North Carolina. Anyone planning APRN-level work in Arizona should confirm with UNCW.

Can I do UNCW FNP clinicals in Phoenix or Tucson?

No. UNCW's handbook says FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students complete clinical and practicum hours in North Carolina only, with preceptors practicing in the state. An Arizona site would not count toward a UNCW practicum, whatever its quality. You can live in Arizona and take the online coursework, then travel for each practicum.

Would my Arizona preceptor qualify for the state preceptor grant?

Probably not in practice. Arizona's grant program was built for volunteer preceptors of graduate students, with rural primary care first in line, but state budget records carry no money for it in the current two fiscal years. Even if funding returned, only UNCW's educator students would have Arizona preceptors, because UNCW's NP preceptors work in North Carolina.

Can I complete the UNCW Post APRN DNP project in Arizona?

UNCW's admission wording puts the Post APRN project in the state where you are licensed as an RN and approved as an APRN, and most students base it at work. An Arizona multistate RN license meets the RN part of UNCW's wording. Ask UNCW how Arizona's rules apply to a project site before you commit to one.
