Count your days before anything else. The text of UNCW's clinical handbook wants placement details filed 8 weeks or more ahead of the semester, and the process chart in the same handbook says 90 days ahead of the course, so measure from whichever comes first. Inside either one, a placement can still come together, but the winning site is one that can say yes quickly and ideally already holds an agreement with UNCW.

Your first two days

Count back from your course startFor spring 2027 the Registrar lists classes starting January 11, which puts the 90-day line in mid-October and the 8-week line in mid-November. Summer and fall practica count back the same way. The 8-week deadline page walks through both rules.

Call sites that need no new contractUNCW sets up an affiliation agreement only when a site asks for one. A practice that asks for none, or already holds one, can move from yes to packet without a contract review.

Existing agreements are your shortcut

A new affiliation agreement can take six weeks or longer to process, which swallows most of an eight-week runway. A site that already has one skips that wait. Several North Carolina organizations publicly name UNCW:

Atrium Health carries UNCW on its roster of clinical education affiliation agreements, a five-year agreement dated April 2024, even as it holds a moratorium on new ones. Atrium wants requests at least three months ahead, and its request form says four to six, so it suits your next practicum better than one starting in weeks.
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist also includes UNC Wilmington on its list of affiliated schools of nursing.
Cone Health in Greensboro counts UNCW among its partner programs and finds the preceptor itself, but wants requests 90 days out and onboarding 60 days out. The same page says students in fully online programs are no longer accepted, so confirm fit with the coordinator.
Goshen Medical Center names UNCW among its affiliated schools, holds the agreement itself rather than through each provider, and runs clinics from Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Hampstead and Southport to Jacksonville and Whiteville. Goshen asks for a placement fee, which under UNCW's rule goes through your UNCW student account, never straight to the site.

What is still realistic inside the line

Late is not the same as impossible. These routes fit a short runway best:

An independent practice or clinic that asks for no affiliation agreement. Once the preceptor signs on, your packet goes to the coordinator, whose review UNCW's chart places about a week after submission.
A second provider at a practice where you already have an approved preceptor, filed on its own packet.
A preceptor from an earlier course, which UNCW allows with the coordinator's approval.
Two part-time preceptors who split the course, each on a separate packet, within UNCW's cap of four per course.
A site from the Clinical Placement Team's list of secured sites, knowing that an offered site is one you are expected to accept.

Paid sites are the hardest late option. Their packets must land inside the Canvas-posted Placement Packet Application Window, because of processing and payment timelines, so a paid site found late may have to wait a semester. See paid clinical sites.

What a late submission costs

UNCW reviews placement requests in the order they arrive, ranked by semester start date, and its handbook warns that a delay can keep you from the best or preferred site. The heavier cost shows up in your calendar. You cannot start until course orientation and coordinator approval are both behind you, yet the course's hours still have to be done by the last day of classes.

That squeeze is easy to underestimate. A 180-hour practicum spread across a 15-week term is about 12 hours a week; start five weeks late and the same course needs 18 a week, and PMHNP students top out at 12 clinical hours per day. Falling short means an incomplete and a pause in progression, covered on behind on clinical hours.

Hold off on patient care while your packet is pending: hours logged before course orientation and Graduate Clinical Coordinator approval can be disqualified.

Will UNCW still review a placement packet that arrives inside 8 weeks?

UNCW's handbook publishes no cutoff after which packets are refused. It says requests are handled in the order received and that a delay may keep you from the best or preferred site. A late packet competes for fewer options, so file it the moment your preceptor signs on and tell the Graduate Clinical Coordinator it is coming.

Where do I find the Placement Packet Application Window dates?

Only in Canvas. UNCW posts the window inside the DNP Immersion and Clinical Overview course rather than on its public pages. It matters most for sites that charge an honorarium, whose packets must be completed within it. If you find a paid site late, ask the Graduate Clinical Coordinator right away whether it can still work this semester.

How much notice does Novant Health need for an NP student?

Novant's number is 30 days: the school files the rotation request in myClinicalExchange no later than 30 days before you start, and Novant warns that clearing its requirements can itself take up to 30 days. Novant, which runs NHRMC in Wilmington, has also announced plans for a priority list of schools; none was public as of September 2026.

Can I start with one preceptor and add a second partway through the term?

Yes. UNCW's handbook plans for students who need more than one site in a semester: every site or preceptor gets its own packet, up to four preceptors in the course. Your second preceptor must be approved by the Graduate Clinical Coordinator and sign the paperwork before you log a single hour with them, so begin that search early.

Is a Clinical Placement Team site the quickest way to get placed?

It can be, because the team maintains its own roster of secured sites and preceptors. The trade-off is choice: a site the team provides is one UNCW expects you to take, and a refusal can cost you the course. Check your drive time and schedule before you ask, so you are ready to say yes.
