When a missing preceptor pushes back your UNCW graduation
UNCW's NP plans of study place each practicum in a set semester, so one practicum you cannot start or finish tends to move everything behind it. The way back: confirm a revised plan with your advisor, line up the next preceptor now rather than next term, and plan against UNCW's completion limits, which its own documents state differently.

Why one missed practicum moves the rest
UNCW's BSN-DNP plans run the four practica in named semesters. Full-time plans stack them in four back-to-back terms from the spring of year 2, alongside didactic courses the practica build on, such as NSG 612 and NSG 613 for the second FNP practicum and NSG 614 and NSG 615 for the third.

A full-time plan has no empty practicum term to absorb a slip, so losing one term tends to shift every later practicum. Part-time plans have a little more air, such as the FNP plan's spring of year 4 with no practicum. UNCW's public pages do not say how often each practicum runs, so ask your advisor when the course you missed is next offered. Track-by-track timing is on first clinical semester.
UNCW's time limits, and why they disagree
Two UNCW documents set different clocks. The 2025-2026 DNP Student Handbook says each student must complete an approved course of study within six years of first registration. The 2026-27 graduate catalog allows 10 years for doctoral students without a related master's and 7 for those with one, and says the clock cannot be paused even during an approved leave of absence.
Until your advisor tells you otherwise, plan to the shorter six-year line. That matters most on a part-time plan: the part-time BSN-DNP plans already run 14 semesters, from fall of year 1 to spring of year 5, so a year lost to a missing preceptor can push you close to the handbook's limit. A leave of absence is capped at one calendar year, and a student who skips enrollment for a full calendar year goes inactive and must reapply.
A leave of absence does not stop the catalog's completion clock.
The curriculum transition adds a question
Students admitted under the 2025-26 catalog or later follow the new practicum sequences, while earlier cohorts may still be on the older ones: NSGL 620 to NSGL 622 for FNP, NSGL 636, NSGL 638 and NSGL 639 for AGPCNP, and NSGL 643 to NSGL 645 for PMHNP. The older courses remain in the 2026-27 course list, but UNCW has published no end date for them.
If you are on an older sequence and fall a term behind, ask your concentration lead now whether your next course will still run when you need it, and which hour model applies to you: the older handbook pairs 540 clinical hours with 460 immersion hours, while the new sequences set 750 direct and 250 non-patient hours. Plan the next practicum before this one ends
On a full-time plan each practicum is followed by the next in the very next term, so the search for your next preceptor overlaps your current clinic days. Treat the two as one project: secure the next course's preceptor while you finish this one, and aim to file well ahead of the 8-week deadline.
Continuity helps. FNP and AGPCNP students may stay at one site for the whole program if it meets each course's objectives, which PMHNP students may not, and any student may return to a previous preceptor with the Graduate Clinical Coordinator's approval. A preceptor who can take you for two consecutive courses, where the course focus allows it, removes one search from your path.

Questions UNCW students ask
Can I switch from full-time to part-time after losing a preceptor?
With approval, yes. UNCW's DNP handbook says a change between full-time and part-time study needs sign-off from the DNP Program Coordinator and the Concentration Leader. A part-time plan spaces the practica out, but it also stretches your total time toward UNCW's completion limits, so weigh that trade-off with your advisor.
Can I start my next practicum while an incomplete is still open?
Generally not. UNCW's DNP handbook says program progression halts until an incomplete is completed, so the next practicum waits for the hours you still owe. Finishing those hours quickly, sometimes with a second preceptor added to the course, is usually the fastest way back onto your plan of study.
Can UNCW extend my time limit if the delay was out of my control?
The 2026-27 graduate catalog mentions a single extension of up to one year for the doctoral time limit, while the DNP handbook's six-year rule sits alongside it. Raise the question with your advisor and concentration lead as soon as a delay appears, not in your final term.
Will a delay move me onto the new curriculum?
UNCW has published no rule on moving delayed students between the old and new practicum sequences, and its preceptor pages simply say the student will clarify which curriculum they follow. Confirm your sequence with your concentration lead before you register for the next practicum, and before you give a preceptor course numbers.
Does the MSN Nurse Educator have a time limit too?
Yes. The 2026-27 graduate catalog gives master's students five calendar years, and the MSN Nurse Educator catalog page counts five years from first registration. Educator practicums also need the site, preceptor and agreement in place at least 5 weeks before the practicum starts, so a lost preceptor there calls for the same early replanning.
