UNCW's 2026-27 calendar for clinical nursing students
Fall 2026 classes at UNCW run from August 19 through finals ending December 10, yet the Preceptor's Corner tells preceptors the fall semester opens August 10. Spring 2027 classes begin January 11 and finals close on May 6. Below are the dates that shape a practicum, the 7-week sessions the online programs follow, and the withdrawal, incomplete and leave rules to know before a site falls through.

Two calendars, one practicum
The Registrar's Important Dates and Deadlines page is UNCW's working calendar, and the catalog points to it for the official drop/add window. The Preceptor's Corner, written for clinicians, gives its own semester dates: January 13 to April 30, 2026 for spring, and August 10 to December 10, 2026 for fall.
The fall start dates do not line up. The Registrar opens fall classes on August 19, nine days after the Preceptor's Corner date, and neither page explains the difference. It may mark when DNP clinical courses open, but UNCW does not say so. Your syllabus and Canvas course settle it, inside two firm edges from the clinical overview: no site time before the first day of course orientation and Graduate Clinical Coordinator approval, and every hour complete before the last day of classes.
In spring 2027 the Registrar lists April 28 as the last day of classes, eight days before finals end, so plan your hours to that date. Build your preceptor's schedule around the narrower window, and see the 8-week submission deadline page for the lead time that comes before all of this.

Undergraduate withdrawal deadlines fall earlier, on October 20 and March 17. Final grades are due December 14 and May 10.
Summer terms and the 7-week sessions
Full-time BSN-DNP plans put the second practicum in the summer of year two, so the summer calendar matters to NP students too. The Registrar lists Summer 1 from May 17 to June 15, 2027 and Summer 2 from June 22 to July 21, with graduate withdrawal deadlines of June 8 and July 14. How a summer practicum sits across those sessions is set by your course, so read the syllabus dates rather than assuming.
The MSN Nurse Educator and the Nurse Educator certificate run on UNCW's online accelerated 7-week sessions instead, and the RN-BSN teaches in 7-week courses with six starts a year.

The Registrar's page still labels the first two fall sessions with 2025 headings, though the dates listed are for 2026. The ABSN runs four back-to-back semesters from one summer to the next, and the prelicensure BSN is full-time only.
Drop/add and withdrawal: where W turns into WF
Drop/add closes about a week into each regular term. After that, leaving a course is a withdrawal, and the graduate catalog sets the grade by timing: withdraw in the first week and no grade appears, withdraw from the second through the twelfth week and you receive a W, and from the thirteenth week a WF is assigned. Shorter terms apply the same fractions of their length.
Two costs follow. Withdrawing from one course after drop/add brings no refund or fee reduction, and graduate students must complete at least half of all the credit hours they attempt. For DNP students the stakes are higher still, since the DNP grading scale treats a WF as dismissal; the rest of that scale is on grades and progression.
If you drop a clinical course or leave the program, UNCW asks you to tell both your site and the Clinical Placement Team, so the preceptor is not left holding a slot for you.
Incompletes, leave and staying enrolled
An incomplete buys time, up to one year under the graduate catalog, after which an unresolved I becomes an I/F automatically. In the DNP, an incomplete clinical course also halts progression until it is finished.
A leave of absence is for students who will not use university resources for a stretch. You apply to the Graduate School, and the maximum is one calendar year. Miss the term you agreed to return, or go a full calendar year without enrolling, and your status turns inactive, which means applying for admission again. The catalog adds that the degree time limit keeps running during an approved leave.
If you have finished coursework but not exit requirements, you must still be enrolled in the term you complete your work or receive the degree; continuous enrollment is one credit hour, usable three times before a form is needed. Full-time graduate status in a regular term is 9 credit hours and half-time is 4.5. The Nurse Educator certificate lets students pause for one or more sessions, and prelicensure students may take an approved personal withdrawal of up to 12 months, with re-entry depending on the Director's approval and open space.
When a site falls through mid-term
A preceptor who leaves in week five collides with every date above. Hours still have to be finished before the last day of classes, a WF waits after week twelve, and an incomplete stalls your plan of study. Acting early keeps the most options open.

What is the last day to withdraw from a UNCW graduate course in spring 2027?
April 8, 2027, according to the Registrar, and you receive a W. Summer 1 and Summer 2 carry their own graduate deadlines of June 8 and July 14, and each 7-week session has a separate WP date. DNP students should talk to course faculty before withdrawing, because the DNP scale counts a WF as dismissal.
Can I do clinical hours over fall break or Thanksgiving at UNCW?
UNCW's DNP clinical overview says no clinical or immersion hours may be accrued while the campus is closed, calling it a liability and safety issue. The Registrar lists fall break as October 8-10 and no classes on November 25-28. Ask course faculty which days count as closures before your preceptor schedules you.
How long can I take a leave of absence from UNCW graduate nursing?
Up to one calendar year, through the Graduate School, if you will not be using university resources. If you do not return in the agreed term, or go a full calendar year without enrolling, your status becomes inactive and you must reapply. The time limit on your degree keeps running during the leave.
Do UNCW's online nurse educator programs follow the semester calendar?
