Illinois nurses and UNCW's online programs
Illinois adds two wrinkles for UNCW students. It stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and its administrative code adds an approval step whenever a program from another state wants to place students in Illinois clinical settings, without saying whether graduate or RN-BSN programs are included. Nurse practitioner clinicals happen in North Carolina either way.

The Illinois rule for programs from other states
Illinois routes this through IDFPR, its Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The rule, 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1300.340(n), gives schools based elsewhere a five-item application to file before their students take Illinois clinical placements.
What the program hands IDFPR
- Evidence of good standing with the board back home, whether approval or accreditation
- A letter setting out the time frame and the Illinois agencies and units it plans to use
- Forms showing faculty qualifications and naming preceptors
- The course syllabus
- An executed contract with the clinical facility
Approval holds for two years and renews, with a report due every year, and the program's nursing faculty must be licensed as Illinois RNs. The open question is scope: the provision sits among the rules for RN programs and never says whether RN-BSN or graduate programs are covered.
UNCW's status is unknown. It was absent from IDFPR's approved-programs PDF modified September 18, 2026, but that document lists Illinois schools only, and approvals of programs from elsewhere are recorded in board minutes that were not searched in full.

Licenses and preceptors under Illinois law
Illinois has no compact bill pending, so an Illinois license gives no practice privilege elsewhere and a multistate license from another state gives none in Illinois. That leaves an Illinois-only license short of UNCW's compact wording for the DNP concentrations. The Nurse Practice Act, 225 ILCS 65/50-15, lets nurses holding another jurisdiction's RN license practice within graduate study or a bachelor's completion program 'in this State'; how that phrase applies to an online program based in North Carolina is not settled in the sources.
Illinois preceptor standards echo UNCW's educator rule. Program faculty approve and orient each preceptor, who must be physically on hand for every stretch of patient care and hold an RN license from whichever state the student is practicing in. Illinois also rewards APRN preceptors: a full semester or quarter with one APRN student is worth 10 CE hours at renewal, capped at 30 each cycle, once the school documents it.
Practice climate and places in Illinois
The AANP counts Illinois as reduced practice. Some practice settings require an NP to hold a physician collaborative agreement, and an NP must meet experience and continuing education thresholds and consult with a physician before prescribing certain Schedule II drugs and benzodiazepines. For educator practicums and leadership projects, the Chicago area, Rockford, Peoria and the Illinois counties of greater St. Louis hold employers such as Endeavor Health, Advocate Health Care, UChicago Medicine, OSF HealthCare and Northwestern Medicine. NP students with an Illinois address
An Illinois home leaves the NP rule untouched: FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP hours count for UNCW only when completed in North Carolina under North Carolina preceptors, as the rule page sets out. Budget for a North Carolina RN license, travel and a place to stay each practicum term. Moving mid-program is not covered by any published UNCW policy.

Questions UNCW students ask
Does UNCW need Illinois approval for my nurse educator practicum?
Possibly. Programs from other states that want Illinois clinical placements must apply to IDFPR, but the rule does not say whether graduate programs are included, and nothing in it addresses a classroom-based educator practicum. UNCW's status could not be confirmed, so ask UNCW before you choose an Illinois site.
Can I use my Illinois nursing license for UNCW's DNP?
Not by itself for the NP concentrations. UNCW's admission wording calls for North Carolina licensure or a compact license, and Illinois licenses are neither, so FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students need a North Carolina license for their clinicals. Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership applicants should ask UNCW how it applies the same wording.
Do Illinois preceptors get continuing education credit for precepting?
Yes, for APRNs. One APRN student carried through a whole semester or quarter equals 10 continuing education hours at license renewal, with at most 30 counted per cycle and the student's school supplying the paperwork. It matters to Illinois APRNs, not to the North Carolina preceptors who work with UNCW's NP students.
Can a UNCW FNP student do clinicals in Chicago?
No. UNCW's FNP concentration draws a firm line at the North Carolina border for clinical and practicum hours, and its preceptors work inside that line, so hours earned in Chicago or anywhere else in Illinois do not count. You can take the online courses from Illinois and plan a North Carolina stay for each practicum semester.
