Indiana's board draws its line at initial licensure

The Indiana State Board of Nursing sits within the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Its accreditation work covers Indiana-based schools whose graduates will sit for an RN or LPN license the first time, and the board states outright that it leaves RN-BSN and graduate nursing programs unreviewed. Rule 848 IAC 1-2-4, on which programs qualify, speaks only to pre-licensure RN and PN schools.

So no approval step turned up for a North Carolina RN-BSN or graduate program whose student completes a practicum in Indiana. That makes Indiana simpler than its neighbor Illinois, which has an approval rule of its own. Two checks still apply: UNCW's approval of your site and preceptor, and a word with UNCW's state authorization office before enrollment.

Licensing, practice and places in Indiana

• Compact status: Indiana multistate licenses date from July 1, 2020, and one issued by Indiana as your home state fits UNCW's compact wording.
• APRN Compact: not enacted in Indiana.
• Practice environment: the AANP lists Indiana as reduced practice, where at least one element of NP practice runs through a regulated collaborative agreement with a physician.
• State preceptor incentive: none identified. Public health agency: the Indiana Department of Health.

Indiana's larger systems illustrate the settings an educator practicum or DNP project might use: Community Health Network, Parkview Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Franciscan Health and IU Health. Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood and Fort Wayne lie wholly inside the state, while the northwest corner belongs to the Chicago metro and part of the south to Louisville's. These names are illustrations; none is described as hosting UNCW students.
