Iowa nurses and UNC Wilmington's programs
Iowa handles outside nursing schools in its own way: its Board of Nursing sets conditions for them rather than approving them, and the first condition is authorization from Iowa College Aid. Those conditions matter for UNCW's online programs, whose practicums and projects can happen in Iowa. UNCW's NP concentrations follow another rule entirely, with every clinical hour in North Carolina.

Iowa's conditions for schools based elsewhere
Iowa takes an unusual route. Its criteria page for nursing programs based in other states lists what a school has to do before its students train in Iowa:
- get authorization to operate in the state from Iowa College Aid
- respect Iowa law as well as the rules of its own state
- supply data to the Board on request
- ensure its faculty and preceptors teaching in Iowa are licensed there or hold a multistate license
- put clinical contracts in writing that spell out who does what, leave faculty in charge of student learning, and build in a yearly review and a way to end the arrangement
A nurse already licensed who attends clinicals in Iowa as a student needs a current license from Iowa or a multistate one and must practice by Iowa Code, and the program and facility approve preceptors together. Iowa's student exemption excludes anyone already licensed as a nurse. UNCW does not publish its Iowa College Aid status, so ask its state authorization office before choosing an Iowa site; the state authorization page explains what UNCW does publish.
Settings from Des Moines to the Quad Cities
Three systems anchor much of Iowa's care: MercyOne, UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care. People cluster around Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, plus Davenport, whose metro area crosses into Illinois. These show where nurse educators and health leaders work, not where UNCW has sites.
An MSN practicum still needs one educational site for both courses, a preceptor employed there with a master's or higher and three years of teaching, and UNCW's approval with a signed agreement five weeks ahead. The nurse educator practicum guide has the course detail.
What changes for Iowa nurses choosing an NP track
Iowa law does not decide where a UNCW NP student trains; UNCW's handbook does. The 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook limits FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical and practicum hours to North Carolina, UNCW's preceptor pages call for providers practicing or licensed there, and the PMHNP certificate follows suit. Does the Iowa Board of Nursing have to approve UNCW?
No. Iowa leaves approval to each program's home state and sets conditions of its own instead: authorization from Iowa College Aid, compliance with Iowa law, qualifying clinical contracts, and Iowa-based faculty and preceptors licensed in Iowa or under the compact. Ask UNCW whether it meets those conditions for your program before you plan an Iowa practicum.
What license do I need for a UNCW practicum in Iowa?
Iowa expects a nurse attending clinicals there as a post-licensure student to hold either an Iowa license or a multistate one, active in both cases. For UNCW's NP concentrations the question plays out differently: an Iowa multistate license satisfies UNCW's compact rule, but the clinical hours themselves are completed in North Carolina.
Do Iowa nurses earn continuing education credit for precepting?
Yes. Sixty or more hours spent precepting a nursing student in a structured preceptorship can be claimed as 6 contact hours toward an Iowa license renewal, as long as the school supplies documentation. It is a renewal credit arranged between the preceptor and the program, and a useful point to mention when asking an Iowa educator to precept.
Can my UNCW Post APRN DNP project be based in Iowa?
UNCW places the Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership project in the state where you are licensed, and most students use their own workplace under a letter of agreement with UNCW. For an Iowa nurse that points to Iowa, with the state's conditions for out-of-state programs in the background. Confirm with UNCW before you fix the project site.
