Planning UNC Wilmington nursing study from Missouri
Missouri nurses hold multistate licenses, which fits UNCW's license rules, and no Missouri rule forcing out-of-state programs to seek approval turned up. So a Missouri nurse can keep an educator practicum, RN-BSN practice experiences or a leadership doctoral project close to home. The NP concentrations are the exception: their clinicals take place in North Carolina, whatever your home state.

Missouri's board and out-of-state programs: an open question
A search of the Missouri board's rules and published guidance found nothing that makes a school from another state apply, register or give notice ahead of Missouri placements. Its program rules, 20 CSR 2200-2, govern schools the Board itself recognizes.
Missouri's licensing law, RSMo 335.081(6)(a), excuses people enrolled in "approved schools of professional nursing" from holding a Missouri license while they practice under supervision, but it never says whether a school approved elsewhere qualifies. The Board was not contacted directly, so the picture is incomplete.
Missouri's silence is not a written yes: confirm with UNCW before you settle on a Missouri practicum site.
Compact licensing, collaborative practice and a tax credit
The compact became Missouri law through RSMo 335.360 in July 2017, and multistate licenses followed when it went live in January 2018. A Missouri multistate license therefore meets any UNCW rule that asks for a compact license. Missouri has not adopted the APRN Compact.
AANP files Missouri under restricted practice. Every Missouri NP works under a physician collaborative practice arrangement that lasts the whole career, and the state caps ratios, requires chart review and limits controlled-substance prescribing. That background matters for Post APRN applicants, who need APRN licensure or approval where they live and a current advanced practice role. Missouri's preceptor tax credit (RSMo 135.690) is written for doctors and PAs teaching Missouri medical and PA students, so NPs gain nothing from it.
Where a practicum or project could take shape
CoxHealth, MU Health Care, BJC HealthCare, SSM Health and Mercy are among Missouri's largest systems. Most residents live on the Missouri side of the St. Louis and Kansas City metros or around Springfield and Columbia, and public health runs through the state's health department (DHSS). For a nurse educator practicum, a leadership project or RN-BSN practice experiences, these are examples of settings, not UNCW sites.

Before you choose an NP concentration
Picture your practicum semesters in North Carolina, not Missouri. UNCW's 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook confines NP clinical time, whether family, adult-gerontology or psychiatric, to North Carolina sites, and its preceptor pages describe supervisors who practice in or are licensed by North Carolina; the psychiatric post-doctoral certificate follows the same path. Your Missouri multistate license is accepted for the license condition. Getting there, staying there and the hours lost to driving fall to you. Questions UNCW students ask
Can I do UNCW's nurse educator practicum in St. Louis or Kansas City?
UNCW's educator preceptor rule ties the preceptor's license to the practicum site's state, so a Missouri site can work if it meets UNCW's other conditions: a single educational site used for both courses, a staff educator there with at least a master's degree and three years in teaching, and UNCW approval backed by a signed agreement five weeks before the practicum opens.
Does Missouri require UNCW to register before placing students?
Nothing requiring it surfaced in the Board's rules or published guidance. Missouri's program rules cover schools the Board itself recognizes, and its student exemption speaks of approved schools without saying how one from another state is treated. The Board was not contacted during research, so treat the point as unresolved and ask UNCW's state authorization office to confirm before choosing a Missouri site.
Can a Missouri NP preceptor claim the state's preceptor tax credit?
Not under the current statute. Missouri's credit, available since January 2023, is limited to Missouri-licensed physicians and PAs precepting Missouri medical or PA students. NPs and other APRNs fall outside its scope, as do nursing students, so it has no role in a UNCW placement.
Does a Missouri license work for UNCW's NP concentrations?
For the license condition, yes. Missouri is a compact state, and UNCW's NP admission requirement can be met with an RN license from North Carolina or from any compact state. Where the hours happen is a different question: North Carolina, under North Carolina clinicians, so budget for travel and lodging during each practicum semester.
