The Kentucky Board of Nursing leaves programs from other states to their home regulators; it neither approves them nor asks them to apply, even when a student's only link to Kentucky is a clinical there. That keeps a Kentucky practicum straightforward for UNCW's online students outside the NP tracks. Nurse practitioner students are the exception: their clinical hours belong to North Carolina.

Kentucky's board and programs from other states
KBN's program oversight covers one group: prelicensure schools that originate in Kentucky. Outside programs, it says, need nothing from KBN, even one whose sole Kentucky footprint is a student's clinical. RN-BSN education lies beyond KBN's reach, and on the graduate side it looks only at programs that end in a license.
A statute KBN cites, KRS 314.101, lets a nurse licensed elsewhere do a Kentucky clinical rotation without a Kentucky license, provided the school is a SARA member or holds a license from Kentucky's postsecondary council. UNCW's SARA approval dates to February 8, 2017. The state authorization guide explains that membership.

License rules for preceptors and faculty in Kentucky
Kentucky puts its conditions on the people who supervise students rather than on the program.
- APRN tracks of online MSN and DNP programs: the faculty member overseeing a student in a Kentucky clinical setting, and any preceptor there, must be licensed in Kentucky twice over, as an RN and as an APRN. A faculty member living in another compact state needs just the APRN one.
- RN-BSN programs: a supervising instructor or preceptor who lives outside the compact needs a Kentucky RN license.
- Your own license: Kentucky's compact participation started January 19, 2018, and a multistate license issued there fits the compact option on UNCW's DNP admission pages.
The APRN rule matters little for UNCW, since its NP clinicals happen in North Carolina. Educator practicums are covered already, since UNCW's own rule puts the preceptor's license in the practicum's state.
Practice law and health care across Kentucky
On AANP's scale Kentucky is reduced practice. An NP who prescribes keeps one physician agreement for controlled substances and another for everything else, barring a Board exemption, and rules on employer settings apply during the first licensed year. Research turned up no Kentucky preceptor incentive program.
Nurse educators and nurse leaders work across Baptist Health, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, UofL Health, Norton Healthcare and UK HealthCare, with the Louisville, Lexington, northern Kentucky and Bowling Green areas as the population centers. These are examples of settings for a practicum or project, and each still needs UNCW's approval and an agreement.
Nurse practitioner students: a North Carolina plan
Living in Kentucky does not open Kentucky sites to UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP students. Every one of their practicum hours belongs to a North Carolina site with a North Carolina preceptor, a rule explained on the North Carolina clinical rule page. Budget for travel and lodging during practicum semesters, because drive time earns no clinical credit.

Does the Kentucky Board of Nursing need to approve UNCW?
No. KBN treats approval of programs from other states as outside its role, and it asks nothing of them even when a clinical is their sole Kentucky activity. It regulates prelicensure programs based in Kentucky. License rules for faculty and preceptors still apply, so confirm your practicum plan with UNCW.
Can I do UNCW FNP clinical hours in Louisville or Lexington?
No. Louisville and Lexington are outside North Carolina, and UNCW recognizes NP practicum hours only from North Carolina sites and preceptors. Your Kentucky multistate license still satisfies UNCW's license condition for enrolling in the NP concentrations, so the question is travel, not eligibility.
Can I do UNCW's RN-BSN practice experiences at my Kentucky job?
Often, yes. UNCW lets RN-BSN practice experiences take place at your present job and sets no required count of clinical hours. KBN has no jurisdiction over RN-BSN programs, and the license UNCW looks for is your Kentucky one, kept in good standing.
What does my Kentucky educator preceptor need?
A Kentucky license, since UNCW ties the preceptor's license to the practicum location. UNCW also wants a Master of Science or higher, three or more years of teaching in education or practice, and employment at the site itself. Plan for UNCW's review of site and preceptor five weeks or more ahead of the practicum.
