Studying with UNC Wilmington from Louisiana
Louisiana runs one of the stricter gates for nursing programs based elsewhere: board approval, requested six months out, before any course or clinical experience in the state. UNCW was not among the approved schools in April 2026. NP students complete their clinicals in North Carolina regardless, so educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP students have the most to check.

What LAC 46:XLVII.3539 asks of a school based elsewhere
Both undergraduate and graduate programs fall under this rule. If a nursing program is administered from another state, Louisiana's State Board of Nursing has to approve it before a single Louisiana course or clinical rotation begins. The school files; a student cannot apply on the program's behalf.

- A letter of request that names each Louisiana clinical agency and unit
- Curriculum, syllabi and catalog
- Survey forms for each clinical facility and qualification forms for faculty
- Pass data for NCLEX and certification exams
- Proof the program is approved at home and regionally accredited, plus nursing accreditation from a national body Louisiana recognizes
After approval, the paperwork continues. Graduate students go on the board's clinical experience spreadsheet, due two weeks after each experience begins. The school's instructors on Louisiana soil need that state's RN or APRN license, graduate nursing preparation and a minimum of two years in clinical practice. In precepted courses, faculty check in with the student and preceptor every week and make a site visit each term. Approvals expire after three years at most, and the school petitions to renew.
Where UNCW stands
The board's school list has a section for out-of-state schools cleared to offer clinical experience in Louisiana. UNCW was not in the version revised April 28, 2026, which was read from an archived copy because the board's own site blocked access. Lists change, so treat that as a snapshot.
The gap touches the programs whose hands-on work follows your license. Whether the rule reaches an educator practicum taught in a classroom is not spelled out. Before enrolling, ask UNCW's state authorization office and your program how they would handle a Louisiana site.

Licensing and practice in Louisiana
Louisiana nurses have held multistate licenses since July 1, 2019, and one issued there satisfies UNCW's license condition for the DNP. The separate compact for APRNs is not law in Louisiana. The AANP puts the state in its reduced-practice group: some part of an NP's practice always runs under a collaborative agreement with a physician. Practical nurses have their own examiners board, and no state preceptor incentive turned up.
Should an approved practicum or project become possible, the main employers cluster in Shreveport-Bossier City, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans-Metairie: FMOL Health, Ochsner Health, Willis-Knighton Health, LCMC Health and Baton Rouge General among them. NP concentrations: Louisiana home, North Carolina practicums
Every NP practicum hour, whether FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP, belongs in North Carolina under UNCW's DNP handbook, with preceptors practicing or licensed there, so Louisiana's six-month rule never touches those courses. Questions UNCW students ask
Can a UNCW nurse educator student do the practicum in Louisiana?
Only after the approval question is resolved. Louisiana requires programs based in other states to hold board approval before clinical experiences there, and UNCW was not on the April 2026 list. The rule does not say whether a classroom-based educator practicum counts, so ask UNCW before you enroll or commit to a site.
Is a Louisiana nursing license enough for UNCW's DNP?
Louisiana belongs to the compact, and UNCW's DNP admission pages accept licenses from compact states as well as North Carolina's. A multistate Louisiana license, with Louisiana as your primary residence, fits that wording. NP students still complete all of their clinical hours in North Carolina, whatever license they hold.
Do UNCW NP students need Louisiana approval for their clinicals?
No. UNCW keeps nurse practitioner clinical hours in North Carolina, so Louisiana's approval rule never comes into play for those courses. It matters for the programs whose practicum, practice experience or project can happen where you live, such as the MSN Nurse Educator and the leadership DNPs.
What does Louisiana expect once a program is approved?
Ongoing reporting and supervision. Graduate students are logged on the board's spreadsheet two weeks into each experience, faculty teaching in the state carry Louisiana licenses, and precepted students get weekly faculty contact plus a site visit every term. After three years at most, the school petitions to keep its approval.
