UNC Wilmington nursing programs for Mississippi nurses
You can take UNCW's online coursework from Mississippi, but the hands-on part depends on your program. Nurse practitioner clinicals happen only in North Carolina. UNCW's nurse educator programs, RN-BSN and leadership DNPs can use a site where you live, except that Mississippi reviews out-of-state programs first, and UNCW was missing from the August 2026 list.

In Mississippi, the higher education board holds the gate
Most states leave out-of-state programs to the nursing board. Mississippi gives RN degree programs to IHL, the Board of Trustees for its State Institutions of Higher Learning, and leaves practical nursing programs with the state's Board of Nursing. IHL expects nursing degree programs from other states, undergraduate or graduate, to meet Mississippi standards whenever they run clinical experiences there, and it counts a practicum in the state as physical presence.
Physical presence means a review by IHL's nursing education office, which may run as long as three months; the procedures manual asks programs run from outside the state to file at least four months ahead of the start. The program must also take part in SARA or hold other distance-education authorization. UNCW entered SARA on February 8, 2017, but that membership is a separate step from the IHL review.
UNCW did not appear on IHL's list of out-of-state programs reviewed, in the file dated August 20, 2026. Duke was the only North Carolina school on it.
Educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP students in Mississippi
For the programs that can travel, settle that missing listing before you enroll. A nurse educator practicum in Mississippi, RN-BSN practice work there, or a Post APRN or Nurse Executive Leadership project in the state could need IHL's review first. IHL's rules are silent on educator practicums that take place in classrooms instead of patient units, so raise it early with UNCW's state authorization office. IHL also wants graduate students in clinical courses licensed, without encumbrance, as RNs in the state hosting those clinicals. Mississippi's compact membership dates from January 19, 2018, so a Mississippi multistate license answers that standard and UNCW's compact wording at once.
If a Mississippi site becomes possible, a few large systems show the range: UMMC (University of Mississippi Medical Center), Singing River Health System, Forrest Health, North Mississippi Health Services, and Memphis-based Baptist Memorial Health Care with its Jackson hospital, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. They are examples, not UNCW sites.

- AANP practice environment: reduced. An NP here works inside a collaborative arrangement with a Mississippi physician or dentist, and the board signs off on it.

Nurse practitioner tracks: the practicums move east
UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP concentrations, the MSN-DNP PMHNP pathway and the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate count clinical hours only when they are logged in North Carolina under preceptors practicing in that state. From Mississippi, each practicum semester means a long trip and a place to stay, on your own budget, and none of the road time counts. Can I do my UNCW FNP clinicals in Mississippi?
No. Under the DNP Student Handbook, every clinical and practicum hour in UNCW's three NP concentrations must be earned in North Carolina. You can live in Mississippi and take the online courses, but each practicum runs with a North Carolina preceptor, so budget for travel and lodging during those semesters.
Is UNCW approved by Mississippi IHL for nursing clinicals?
UNCW was absent from IHL's Out-of-State Programs Reviewed list in the file dated August 20, 2026. Because IHL treats a clinical practicum in Mississippi as physical presence, nursing degree programs from elsewhere go through its review first. Check UNCW's current status with the university before you plan any Mississippi practicum, practice experience or DNP project.
Does a Mississippi nursing license meet UNCW's DNP license rule?
It can. UNCW's DNP concentrations take an RN license from North Carolina or any compact state, and Mississippi is a compact member. Your license needs to be multistate, issued by Mississippi as your primary state of residence, and in good standing. Practicums for NP students still take place in North Carolina.
How long does IHL take to review a nursing program from another state?
Up to about three months, by IHL's own estimate, and its procedures manual wants the request in hand four months or more before clinicals start. The school files it, not the student, so a Mississippi practicum depends on UNCW choosing to seek the review.
