Montana's Board of Nursing asks for approval only when an out-of-state school places pre-licensure students, so UNCW's educator practicums, RN-BSN practice experiences and leadership DNP projects can happen in Montana without a Board application, provided your license is good for Montana practice. The nurse practitioner concentrations are the exception: UNCW keeps their clinical hours in North Carolina.

Montana's board draws its approval line at pre-licensure
ARM 24.159.608 is the rule that makes an outside school ask permission, and its target is pre-licensure students. For them the program director files a signed request carrying home-state approval and accreditation proof, the names of preceptors and faculty, a plan for supervising students, the facility agreement, and a statement from Montana's own program directors that their students keep their places.
Graduate and RN-to-BSN programs, according to the Board's FAQ, can run Montana clinicals without that request. What the Board still insists on is licensure: the school has to make sure your license is active and good for Montana practice, since the patients you see are Montana patients. A UNCW instructor who only talks with you and your preceptor has no Montana license to get; that changes only for faculty who care for patients directly.
With no approval list for these programs, there is nothing for UNCW to appear on. UNCW publishes no Montana-specific statement either, so check your plans with its state authorization office before enrolling.
Your license, the compact and NP practice in Montana
Montana's compact membership took effect in January 2018, on the 19th. The state's RN licensing page confirms that nurses holding compact privileges issued elsewhere can practice in Montana on them. Montana has not enacted the APRN Compact, and AANP puts it among the full practice states, which matters if you later practice there as an NP.
Billings, Missoula and the settings in between
Billings alone has two major hospitals: Billings Clinic, now part of one system with Logan Health, and the St. Vincent Regional Hospital that Intermountain Health operates. In Missoula, Providence runs St. Patrick Hospital, and Benefis Health System is another of the state's larger systems. The four metro areas are Billings, Bozeman, Missoula and Helena. Read these as examples of settings, not as sites with UNCW agreements.
An educator practicum follows UNCW's rules wherever it sits: one educational site for both practicum courses, a preceptor at that site holding at least a master's and three or more years in teaching, and UNCW's approval plus a signed agreement no later than five weeks before the first course begins. NP concentrations: a Montana address, North Carolina clinicals
For FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students, and for the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate built on the same practicum courses, the 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook sets one location: clinical and practicum hours belong to North Carolina alone, and so do the preceptors, who practice or hold licenses in that state. Your Montana multistate license settles the license half. The location half means each practicum semester is spent at North Carolina sites, with travel and housing on you and road time excluded from your hours. Questions UNCW students ask
Must UNCW get Montana Board approval before my educator practicum?
Not for UNCW's online programs. Montana's permission process is written for out-of-state pre-licensure students, and the Board's FAQ leaves graduate and RN-to-BSN clinicals out of it. The school must still confirm your license covers Montana practice, and UNCW signs its own agreement with each educator practicum site.
Can I do UNCW FNP clinicals at a clinic in Bozeman or Helena?
No. Montana clinics are off the table for UNCW NP hours: the DNP Student Handbook keeps every FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical hour inside North Carolina, with a preceptor who works or is licensed there. Plan on spending each practicum semester there.
Is a Montana multistate license enough for UNCW's NP admission rule?
To enter an NP concentration, UNCW wants an unrestricted RN license that is either North Carolina's own or issued by a compact state, and Montana's compact participation dates from 2018. A Montana multistate license fits that wording. Check that yours is multistate rather than single-state, and confirm with UNCW admissions before applying.
What happens if I move to Montana during a UNCW program?
UNCW has not published a policy for students who relocate mid-program. The move would leave the NP rule untouched, since clinical hours stay in North Carolina. Anyone in the educator, RN-BSN or leadership DNP programs could then use a Montana site, once the license covers practice there. Talk to your advisor before you go.
