North Dakota residents and UNCW: the recognition list explained

North Dakota's Board of Nursing keeps a Recognized Distance Programs list of outside schools cleared to place students in its facilities, and UNC Wilmington is not on it (page last modified September 8, 2026). For UNCW's nurse practitioner students that gap hardly matters, since their clinical hours all happen in North Carolina. For online educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP students eyeing North Dakota settings, it is a question to settle with UNCW before enrolling.

How North Dakota recognition works

Recognition is NDBON's gate for distance programs whose students train in North Dakota facilities in courses that lead to LPN, RN or APRN licensure. A school asks at least 60 days before students arrive and, for graduate programs, pays a yearly fee. After that, each semester and before anyone starts, it sends the Board a packet: who the students are and which North Dakota or compact licenses they hold, the facilities and courses, preceptor and faculty names with resumes and licenses, affiliation agreements, and each facility's word that the clinical space exists.

The statute behind it, NDCC 43-12.1-04(12), excuses students of an out-of-state, board-recognized program from licensure rules once the Board has written notice and a site has room. Recognition in turn needs proof of NC-SARA approval or clearance from the State Board of Higher Education. UNCW has been a SARA participant since February 8, 2017, but SARA status alone does not put a school on NDBON's list.

Because the rule is written around licensure-leading programs, UNCW's online programs may sit outside it, but no published source settles that for an educator practicum or a DNP project. Put the question to UNCW's state authorization office, and read the online programs outside North Carolina guide for each program's license wording.

NP clinical hours: North Carolina, whatever the list says

Even a North Dakota listing would give UNCW's NP students nothing to use. Their 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook requires FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP clinical and practicum hours in North Carolina only, with preceptors practicing or licensed in that state, and the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate shares those courses. A North Dakota multistate license takes care of the license condition. What remains is logistics: a trip to North Carolina every practicum semester, housing you arrange, and travel time that stays off your log. The North Carolina clinical rule page goes deeper.

Nursing in North Dakota: compacts, practice and systems

North Dakota joined the working Nurse Licensure Compact states in January 2018 and has since enacted the APRN Compact, which switches on only after seven states sign; five have. AANP rates North Dakota a full practice state.

Fargo and Bismarck each have a Sanford Health medical center, Bismarck also has CHI St. Alexius Health, Grand Forks is home to Altru Health System, Minot to Trinity Health, and Essentia Health operates in Fargo too. Two of the four metro areas, Fargo and Grand Forks, reach across the Red River into Minnesota. These illustrate settings for educator or leadership work, not places holding UNCW agreements.

Ask UNCW how that bears on your program before planning any North Dakota practicum.

Could UNCW apply for North Dakota recognition on my behalf?

A North Dakota multistate RN license fits UNCW's call for an NC or compact state license in the NP concentrations and the leadership DNPs, North Dakota having been a compact member since 2018. Make sure the license you hold is multistate, and confirm with UNCW admissions before you apply.

What if I move to North Dakota during a UNCW program?

UNCW publishes no policy on relocating mid-program. NP clinical hours would remain in North Carolina. For educator, RN-BSN or DNP project work, North Dakota's recognition rule and UNCW's absence from the list would need an answer before you commit to a site there, so bring your advisor in early.
