Living in New Jersey, studying with UNC Wilmington
New Jersey nurses have one head start: New Jersey entered the Nurse Licensure Compact on November 15, 2021, so a New Jersey multistate license meets UNCW's license requirement for its NP concentrations. Where those NP hours happen does not move, though: North Carolina. For the educator, RN-BSN and leadership programs, the practice work can stay in New Jersey.

Start with your license
A multistate RN license from New Jersey, when New Jersey is where you live, is exactly what UNCW means by a compact license on its NP admission pages. Check that yours is issued as multistate; a single-state license would not satisfy that rule.
The nurse educator MSN and certificate also accept a compact license from your state of legal residence. The RN-BSN ties the license to where you live: it has to stay active and unencumbered in your home state for the whole program. The APRN Compact, a separate agreement still short of the states it needs to start, has no New Jersey enactment.

What New Jersey's board says about outside programs
No New Jersey rule was found requiring an outside school to ask permission, or even to notify the Board, ahead of placing students at a clinical site in the state. The Board's accreditation chapter, N.J.A.C. 13:37, governs programs run by in-state institutions, and its lone section on clinical agencies deals with the opposite situation: in-state programs placing students with agencies beyond New Jersey.
One caveat applies. The Board of Nursing's own website returned a CAPTCHA page, so whatever guidance it posts was not reviewed. UNCW's State Authorization page asks nursing students to check state-specific requirements before enrolling, and UNCW has published no New Jersey-specific determination for any online program, so a short note to the School of Nursing first is time well spent.
New Jersey practice law and where nurses work
AANP lists New Jersey as reduced practice: before an NP there can order medications or devices, joint protocols must be in place with a physician collaborator. Post APRN applicants feel this most, since UNCW admits them on the strength of an advanced practice role they already hold, licensed or approved where they live.
Among the state's largest systems are Hackensack Meridian Health and RWJBarnabas Health, with Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care also on the list. Any setting would still need UNCW's approval and an agreement before hours start. The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro claims more than 7 million of the state's residents, roughly 1.4 million more are counted in Philadelphia's metro, and two smaller metros, Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton, round out the map.

UNCW's handbook rule for FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students is short: every clinical and practicum hour is a North Carolina hour, supervised by someone who practices in North Carolina. Your compact license handles the license half. The geography half means extended stays in North Carolina for each practicum course, on your own transportation. Questions UNCW students ask
Must a New Jersey resident get a North Carolina RN license for UNCW's NP track?
Usually not. New Jersey is a compact state, so the multistate license it issues to residents already counts, and UNCW's NP admission pages accept it for clinical hours in North Carolina. Keep it active and unrestricted through every practicum, and confirm it is multistate rather than single-state before you apply.
Can my UNCW nurse educator practicum be in New Jersey?
Yes. Pick a New Jersey education site and a preceptor who works there, is licensed in New Jersey, holds a master's or doctorate and has taught for three years. MSN students stay at that one site for both practicum courses, and UNCW needs the site, the preceptor and a signed agreement approved five weeks or more before the first course.
Does New Jersey require UNCW approval before my RN-BSN practice experience?
No such requirement was found in New Jersey's nursing regulations, which speak to programs run by in-state institutions. Guidance on the Board's own site was unreachable during research, so a quick check with UNCW's School of Nursing before your first practice-experience course is wise.
Could I split NP clinicals between New Jersey and North Carolina?
No. A split plan fails UNCW's rule, which credits NP clinical hours only from North Carolina sites under North Carolina preceptors. UNCW's DNP FAQ suggests thinking broadly about placements, including friends or family in North Carolina you could stay with during a rotation.
