UNC Wilmington nursing programs for New York nurses
From New York you can take UNCW's online nurse educator programs, the RN-BSN and the leadership DNPs, but the state adds a step few others have: a school based elsewhere needs NYSED's sign-off before its students do clinical rotations in New York, and UNCW's standing is unpublished. NP clinicals happen in North Carolina, and a New York license by itself does not meet UNCW's license rule for them.

Registration comes before any New York placement
NYSED's nursing FAQ leaves little room: out-of-state and online nursing schools need the department's registration or approval first, and without it they may not send students into clinical rotations anywhere in the state. The one carve-out named covers federal VA and U.S. Armed Forces facilities.
A second NYSED office, which evaluates colleges, treats a clinical placement in any licensed field as physical presence in New York. SARA schools are therefore not exempt by default; the Office of the Professions has to approve or exempt them in advance. UNCW joined SARA on February 8, 2017, which settles a lot elsewhere but not here.
Nobody outside NYSED can look up UNCW's status. The department publishes nothing showing which outside programs hold registration and answers status questions only by email, with the address on its nursing FAQ. Whether a classroom-based educator practicum falls under the rule is also unstated, so put both questions to UNCW's State Authorization office and the School of Nursing before you enroll.

The leadership DNPs need a direct conversation with UNCW. Their admission wording asks for a North Carolina or compact RN license, then sets the project wherever you are licensed, and a New York credential fits neither category. Licensing and NP practice in New York
New York remains a non-compact state with no NLC bill pending. Nurses licensed elsewhere are pointed to NYSED's licensure checklist, so an out-of-state multistate license carries no New York practice privilege, and a New York credential carries none in North Carolina.
AANP counts New York among full-practice states, with a catch for newer NPs: until they log 3,600 hours, they work under a written agreement plus protocols with a physician collaborator. New York has not enacted the APRN Compact either.
Educator and leadership students usually anchor the practicum or project in current work. With employers such as Mount Sinai, Northwell Health, UR Medicine in Rochester, NYC Health + Hospitals and NewYork-Presbyterian, many applicants already have a workplace that could fit, subject to UNCW's approval and a signed agreement. Upstate, the Buffalo, Rochester and Albany metro areas each hold roughly a million residents.
NP tracks: the clinical map ends at the North Carolina line
Every FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP practicum hour at UNCW is logged in North Carolina under preceptors who practice there, per the DNP handbook. From New York, that means earning a North Carolina RN license, because your home state issues no compact license, and budgeting for long stays down south each practicum semester.

Questions UNCW students ask
Will my New York RN license qualify me for UNCW's FNP clinicals?
Not by itself. UNCW's NP admission pages call for a North Carolina RN license or a compact license so the clinical hours can be done in North Carolina. Because New York never joined the compact, a New York nurse should plan on holding a North Carolina license before the first practicum.
Has UNCW registered with NYSED for clinical placements?
The answer is not public. NYSED publishes no registry of outside programs it has approved; it replies to status questions emailed to its Office of the Professions with the program's name and address, as its nursing FAQ explains. Ask UNCW's State Authorization office as well, since any registration would be UNCW's to hold.
Would hours at a New York VA medical center count toward UNCW's NP clinicals?
No. NYSED's carve-out for VA and U.S. Armed Forces sites only frees federal facilities from the state's registration rule. UNCW's own policy is separate: the DNP handbook requires FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP hours in North Carolina with preceptors practicing there, so a New York VA site falls outside it.
What if I move to New York partway through a UNCW program?
UNCW publishes no relocation policy, so the existing rules govern: NP clinicals stay in North Carolina on a valid North Carolina license, and educator practicums follow your license and your preceptor's state. Raise New York's registration rule with your advisor before moving.
