UNC Wilmington nursing for South Dakota nurses
South Dakota lets out-of-state nursing programs arrange placements directly with in-state preceptors and agencies, with no Board approval step in between. That makes it workable ground for UNCW's online educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP practice work. Students in UNCW's nurse practitioner concentrations are the exception: their clinical hours all belong to North Carolina.

What the Board expects of programs from elsewhere
The Board's information sheet for out-of-state programs, revised in June 2020, is candid about its role: it approves none of them. A school wanting students in South Dakota direct-care settings strikes its own deal with the preceptor or agency there.
One expectation remains: somewhere on the program's faculty, the Board wants a person able to practice in South Dakota, at the RN level for RN students and the APRN level for APRN students. The distance-education rule, ARSD 20:48:07:49, carries that thinking over to faculty teaching learners physically in the state. That is UNCW's matter rather than yours, though worth raising before you lock in a site. A separate preceptor rule, ARSD 20:48:07:34, is written for programs the Board itself approves; for UNCW, the school's own rules decide who may precept.
Those rules, for educator students, ask for a preceptor licensed in the practicum's state, holding a master's or higher, with three years of teaching, approved five weeks ahead. The nurse educator certificate page covers the certificate's version.
Sanford, Avera and Monument Health country
South Dakota's big three health systems are Avera Health, Monument Health and Sanford Health. Sioux Falls holds the largest metro population, Rapid City is the second metro, and Aberdeen is the biggest micropolitan area. Staff educators, nursing faculty and nurse leaders in settings like these are the people an educator practicum or leadership project would look for, though none are named UNCW partners.
RN-BSN students can usually keep practice experiences at their current job, and Post APRN students generally place the project where they already practice, under a letter of agreement with UNCW. The Post APRN DNP page covers its immersion hours.
If you are headed for an NP concentration
Here the South Dakota picture stops mattering. UNCW's 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook sends FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP students to North Carolina for every clinical and practicum hour, its preceptor pages ask for providers practicing or licensed there, and the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate follows the same practicum courses. A South Dakota multistate license meets the license condition. Budget for time away from home each clinical semester, with getting there and staying there your responsibility. Questions UNCW students ask
Does South Dakota make UNCW register before a practicum there?
No. Per its out-of-state program guidance, the South Dakota Board approves no outside nursing programs, leaving each school to settle placements with local agencies and preceptors. Its one ask is that the program keep somebody on its faculty who holds South Dakota licensure or the privilege to practice. Check with UNCW that your site works before you commit.
Could I get a South Dakota APRN license after UNCW's FNP?
South Dakota's APRN license calls for graduate preparation that includes 500 or more clinical hours in your role and population, along with graduate pharmacology, pathophysiology (or physiology), and health and physical assessment courses. UNCW has published no South Dakota determination for its NP concentrations, so check with the Board and UNCW before relying on it.
Is South Dakota part of the APRN Compact?
South Dakota signed it on February 5, 2024, joining the small group of enacting states. The compact operates only once seven states are in, and five are so far. It has no bearing on UNCW's requirement that NP clinical hours be completed in North Carolina.
What if I move to South Dakota partway through a UNCW program?
UNCW publishes no policy for students who move mid-program. An NP student's clinical hours would stay in North Carolina. Educator, RN-BSN and leadership DNP students could look at South Dakota settings, provided their license covers practice there. Speak with your advisor before relocating.
