Behind on clinical hours in a UNCW practicum
Measure the real gap first: only direct patient care with an approved preceptor, logged in Typhon, counts toward your course. If the shortfall is real, the quickest fix is usually a second preceptor within UNCW's four-per-course limit, approved before the extra hours begin, with the last day of classes as your finish line.

- Log what you have doneUNCW wants every encounter in Typhon within five days. Unlogged hours look like missing hours to your faculty, so catch the log up before you count anything.
- Remove what never countedDrive time, EMR training and site orientation are not clinical hours, and nothing accrues while campus is closed. The clinical hours rules page has the details.
- Check encounters, not only hoursFNP students must reach minimum encounter counts by age group and visit type, and UNCW says missing them blocks graduation even when the hours are done. Observation visits do not count. AGPCNP students need 60 frail-elderly encounters, which the plan of study states as 60 hours.
- Divide by the weeks leftEach course's hours must be finished before the last day of classes. What remains, divided by the weeks you have left, is your real weekly target.
Where the gap usually comes from
Most shortfalls trace back to a few causes, and each has a matching fix inside UNCW's rules.

The FNP and AGPCNP telehealth cap catches students late in the program, because the 50 encounters cover the whole program, not a single course.
Adding a second preceptor
UNCW's handbook anticipates exactly this: when one site can supply only part of a course's hours, students work at more than one site in the same semester, each with its own Clinical Placement Packet, up to four preceptors per course. The added preceptor needs Graduate Clinical Coordinator approval and a signed acknowledgment before your first hour there, and PMHNP additions also need the concentration leader's approval.
Speed decides which second preceptor is realistic mid-term. A new site that asks for an affiliation agreement can take six weeks or more, so the fastest options are another provider in your current practice, a site already holding a UNCW agreement, or a past preceptor you return to with the coordinator's approval. If the semester ends first: incompletes and repeats
A clinical course left unfinished for missing hours or encounters can end in an incomplete, with course faculty setting the time frame for finishing. UNCW's DNP handbook is firm that progression stops until the incomplete is cleared, and the graduate catalog never lets the extension run past a year: an incomplete still open after 12 months converts to an I/F, a grade listed under dismissal on the DNP handbook's scale. An incomplete in your final semester means finishing for a letter grade the next semester and graduating then. The academic calendar page covers the dates.
Repeats are a thin safety net. The DNP allows one repeated course in the whole program, FNP and AGPCNP practica carry a repeat limit of one, and the catalog says PMHNP practica may not be repeated at all. The grades and progression page sets out the rest.
An incomplete buys time but freezes your progress: the next practicum waits until the I is cleared.

Questions UNCW students ask
How many hours a week does a UNCW practicum take?
UNCW's handbook uses a 1:4 ratio, one credit hour to four hours of activity a week. A 3-credit, 180-hour practicum works out to about 12 hours a week over a 15-week term, and the 4-credit, 240-hour capstone to about 16. PMHNP courses carry 187.5 hours each. Lose two weeks early and the weekly load climbs quickly.
Can I make up clinical hours over winter or summer break?
Not for a course in progress. UNCW requires each course's hours before the last day of classes for that semester and bars hours while campus is closed. Hours after the term come into play only under an incomplete, on the time frame your course faculty set, so ask them before you plan anything outside semester dates.
Does a group therapy session count as several PMHNP encounters?
No. UNCW counts a group therapy session as one encounter. PMHNP students also need to be actively engaged, at 25% or more as recorded in Typhon, for time in the therapeutic process to count as clinical hours or encounters, so quietly observing a long session adds little.
When will my faculty notice I am behind?
FNP students submit ICEP evaluations at about 90 clinical hours and then schedule a faculty site visit, and every NP track gets a site visit each semester. Those checkpoints are the natural moment to raise a shortfall, well before the final weeks, while there is still time to add a preceptor.
Do hours with a physician or PA count the same as hours with an NP?
For FNP and AGPCNP, UNCW accepts NP, physician and PA preceptors, and FNP adds certified nurse midwives. The catch is the NP requirement: AGPCNP students need at least one NP preceptor during the program, and the FNP handbook says the same. PMHNP hours come from PMHNPs, psychiatrists or psychiatric PAs, with therapists for therapy hours.
