UNCW's Accelerated BSN: four semesters of assigned clinicals
UNCW's Accelerated BSN is an on-campus, second-degree program that starts in summer and finishes the next summer, four semesters later. Clinical placements are made for you by the School of Nursing, the four semesters carry 675 clinical and lab hours between them, and the final summer includes the NSG 434 capstone with an RN preceptor. Applications for the next cohort open December 1, 2026 and close January 6, 2027.

Who the ABSN is for, and how to get in
The ABSN is the Accelerated (2nd Degree) Option of UNCW's BSN, designed for people changing careers with a bachelor's degree already in hand. That first degree must be finished by the time nursing classes start in early May. UNCW calls it an intensive on-campus program, and it admits once a year.
Admission asks for a 3.0 GPA, prerequisites passed with a B or higher, the TEAS, a clean urine drug screen and background check, plus immunizations, CPR and a flu vaccine. The application window for the next cohort runs from December 1, 2026 to January 6, 2027. UNCW conditionally admits 24 students and names 6 alternates.
The program is new: UNCW's news office covered its first cohort in July 2025. It shares its nursing courses, its clinical handbook and its capstone with the traditional Prelicensure option, compressed into one calendar year plus a summer.
Summer to summer: the four-semester sequence
Every semester mixes classroom and clinical work, and the clinical load rises after the first summer.

The semester figures add up to 675 hours; the ABSN plan page prints the four numbers but no total. Credits are another soft spot. The catalog lists 54 credit hours with no electives, while the web plan totals 58 (15, 16, 15 and 12) with two 3-hour elective slots, and it shows NSG 434 as 3 hours where the catalog and handbooks give 5.
The clinical and lab courses match the Prelicensure BSN, which describes what each one covers.
Clinical assignments and the drive to get there
As in the traditional BSN, UNCW places you. The shared clinical handbook says assignments are made in several off-campus agencies and describes affiliations in six surrounding counties. The ABSN FAQ names four of them, New Hanover, Onslow, Brunswick and Pender, and adds two practical points: every ABSN student arranges their own transportation, and sites may be up to one hour away from the university.
Community rotations can mean riding along in an agency nurse preceptor's car to see clients. Hospital rotations follow the hospital's schedule. The Prelicensure Student Handbook, for example, expects students to manage shifts of up to 12 hours on days, evenings, nights and weekends; check the ABSN Student Handbook for your cohort's wording.
On an accelerated calendar, a reliable car and a schedule you can bend matter as much as study time. Sort out both before the first summer starts, because the second semester already carries three clinical and lab courses.
Vaccines and clearance: agencies can add their own rules
UNCW's ABSN admissions page flags a rule that catches students off guard: "Agencies for clinical rotations may require proof of Covid vaccine or documented proof of need for exemption." That requirement belongs to the agency, not to UNCW, so it can differ from one rotation to the next.
The rest of your clearance follows the shared Prelicensure and ABSN clinical handbook. Certiphi tracks your records, and you pay for a myClinicalExchange account when a clinical partner uses it. The list includes a flu shot by October 1, a hepatitis B series finished no later than six months before you start, a TB test, and American Heart Association BLS, since Red Cross and fully online courses are not accepted.

The final summer and the NSG 434 capstone
Your last semester pairs NSG 430 population and public health, NSG 432 advocacy and policy and an elective with NSG 434, the capstone in prioritization and application of nursing care. In NSG 434 you work one-on-one with an experienced registered nurse, sharpening hands-on skills and practicing the judgment and professional values of a new RN.
The capstone preceptor works at an agency inside UNCW's clinical assignments. UNCW's published materials describe no student search for this preceptor, so your course faculty are the people to ask how pairings are made.
Grading deserves attention in a fast program. The Prelicensure Student Handbook grades clinical components pass or fail, fails the whole course on a clinical failure, and ties re-enrollment to course and clinical placement availability. In a program that admits once a year, that last rule can mean a long wait, so confirm the ABSN version for your cohort and read the grades and progression guide.

Questions UNCW students ask
Is UNCW's ABSN online or on campus?
On campus. UNCW describes the ABSN as an intensive on-campus program in Wilmington, with simulation and lab work at the School of Nursing and clinical rotations at off-campus agencies. UNCW's online nursing options are the RN-BSN, for nurses who are already licensed, and the graduate nurse educator programs.
Does the ABSN lead to the same degree as UNCW's traditional BSN?
Yes. The catalog lists one Bachelor of Science in Nursing with three options: Prelicensure, RN-BSN and Accelerated (2nd Degree). ABSN graduates earn that same BSN, and UNCW's licensure disclosure treats the Prelicensure and ABSN options as a single entry that meets requirements in every state except California.
What does it mean to be an ABSN alternate at UNCW?
UNCW lists 6 alternates alongside the 24 students it conditionally admits each year. Its pages do not spell out how or when alternates move into the cohort, so ask the CHHS Student Success Center. Keep your prerequisites, TEAS and clearance items moving so you are ready if a seat opens.
How soon after the ABSN could I start a UNCW nurse practitioner program?
The BSN-DNP concentrations admit for fall only. If you are accepted as a recent graduate, you must complete 600 hours of RN work before your first NP clinical rotation. Use the gap to get to know primary care providers; UNCW's DNP FAQ recommends building those connections before you apply.
How is the ABSN schedule different from the traditional BSN's nursing semesters?
The nursing content is the same: four semesters, the same clinical and lab courses and the same 675-hour pattern. The difference is the calendar. Prelicensure students reach those semesters after prerequisites and move through fall and spring, while ABSN students run all four back to back, starting in summer and finishing the following summer.
Do clinical sites accept a Covid vaccine exemption?
It depends on the agency. Under UNCW's ABSN wording, each rotation agency sets its own Covid rule, whether that is vaccination records or paperwork showing why you need an exemption. If you plan to request an exemption, raise it with the School of Nursing well before your first summer.
