UNCW clinical evaluations and faculty site visits

Each UNCW NP practicum is evaluated from three directions: your preceptor assesses you, you assess yourself and your placement, and your clinical faculty visit at least once a semester. FNP students file their ICEP evaluations at about 90 hours and then book that visit, and every FNP student has at least one in-person visit during the program.

Who evaluates whom

UNCW runs every experience-related evaluation through Typhon, and three groups complete them: students, clinical faculty and site supervisors. Across a practicum, that produces four kinds of record.

Your preceptor's assessment of you. The Assessment of Clinical Performance by Preceptor, which must be in before the semester ends for you to receive a grade.
Your self-assessment. Your own rating of your clinical progress.
Your assessment of the preceptor and site. Your evaluation of the placement itself.
Faculty evaluations. Completed by your clinical faculty during the site visit, together with an evaluation of the site.

For FNP students, the first three together make up the ICEP, the Individual Clinical Education Plan. All of it is recorded in Typhon, next to your hours and encounters.

ICEP evaluations at about 90 hours

UNCW's clinical handbook sets the FNP timing: "Students will submit ICEP… evaluations at approximately 90 hours of completed clinical hours. After submitting the ICEPs, students will contact clinical faculty to schedule this visit." Each of the three ICEP evaluations is completed twice a semester, at mid-semester and at the end.

In a 180-hour practicum, 90 hours is the halfway point, which lines the first ICEP up with the mid-semester review. In the 240-hour capstone, 90 hours comes earlier, a little over a third of the way through. The hour load for each course is on practicum hours per course.

Reaching 90 hours on schedule depends on steady clinic days from the first week; a slow start pushes the ICEP, the faculty visit and the mid-semester conversation later. The handbook's ICEP and visit-planning section is written for FNP, so AGPCNP and PMHNP students should take their evaluation timing from the course syllabus.

Faculty site visits

Among clinical faculty duties for every NP track, UNCW's handbook lists coordinating a visit to each clinical site once a semester, more often when needed, and completing student evaluations and a site evaluation while there. For FNP it adds specifics: a visit can be in person or virtual, every student has one each semester, at least one visit during the program is in person, and a student with an identified concern for clinical success is visited in person.

The FNP sequence runs in this order.

Reach about 90 hours.Log each clinic day promptly so the count is accurate when you get there.

What UNCW asks of preceptors

UNCW's Preceptor's Corner lists what a preceptor takes on with a UNCW student, and most of it shapes how evaluations go.

Approve the student's written schedule.
Arrange orientation to the agency and bring the student into its work at a suitable pace.
Supervise the student's contacts with patients, directly or through consultation.
Consult with faculty, and contact faculty if any concern about the student's performance comes up.
Take part in evaluating the student's clinical performance.

The student sends the preceptor the course objectives and preceptor guidelines, and faculty supply program information and the evaluation tools. Evaluation links go to the preferred email address UNCW collects with the preceptor's details, so that address has to be current. What preceptors gain from the role, including hours NP preceptors can apply toward North Carolina continuing education, is on precepting a UNCW student.

Nurse educator practicum evaluations

The MSN Nurse Educator and the Nurse Educator certificate divide the work differently. UNCW says the nurse educator preceptor gives course faculty information about the student's work and offers feedback on performance, but is not responsible for evaluating student learning and does not assign grades. Course faculty contact the preceptor in the first week of the practicum course. In the older curriculum, UNCW uses one site for both NSG 596 and NSG 597, so the same preceptor's feedback builds across two sessions.

Preceptors ready for evaluation from day one

Evaluations run smoothly when the preceptor knows what is coming. When we place a UNCW student, your placement advisor confirms at the outset that the preceptor understands UNCW's expectations: a written schedule, supervision of your patient contacts, Typhon evaluations at mid-semester and at the end, and a faculty visit that may be in person.

We collect the preceptor's CV with dates and the site, license number and a working email for evaluation links, and prepare it all for the Graduate Clinical Coordinator's review, so nothing stalls when the first evaluation link arrives. Questions UNCW students ask

What happens if my preceptor has not completed the UNCW evaluation?

UNCW's handbook tells students to verify that the preceptor has completed the Assessment of Clinical Performance by Preceptor before the semester ends in order to receive a grade for the course. Check Typhon a couple of weeks before the last day of classes, remind your preceptor if it is still open, and tell your clinical faculty if it stays incomplete.

Do AGPCNP and PMHNP students get faculty site visits?

Yes. The clinical handbook lists a site visit once per semester to each clinical site, more often if needed, among clinical faculty duties for all NP tracks, with student and site evaluations completed during the visit. The detailed ICEP timing and the in-person requirement are written for FNP, so AGPCNP and PMHNP students take the specifics from their course.

Can my preceptor raise a concern with UNCW directly?

Yes, and UNCW asks them to. The Preceptor's Corner tells preceptors to consult with faculty and to call faculty if any concern about the student's performance arises. Under the FNP handbook, a student with an identified concern for clinical success receives an in-person visit, so raising issues early gives everyone time to address them before the final evaluation.

Do preceptors get anything back for evaluating UNCW students?

UNCW lists benefits of precepting on the Preceptor's Corner, including verification of precepting hours, with up to 30 precepting hours applicable to the 50 continuing education hours the North Carolina Board of Nursing requires of NPs each year, access to UNCW library resources and a potential adjunct faculty appointment. Preceptors also receive documentation of the rotation hours they supervised.
