Arkansas and UNCW nursing: a planning guide
An Arkansas multistate license, plus a board with no known approval step for visiting programs, makes Arkansas workable for three strands of UNCW study: nurse educator (the MSN or the certificate), the RN-BSN, and the leadership doctorates. Nurse practitioner students face a different map, because UNCW puts every NP clinical hour in North Carolina.

How Arkansas's board rules read for visiting programs
Arkansas's education rules are aimed elsewhere. Part 125 of the board's rules (17 CAR) sets prelicensure standards and concerns an outside school only if it plans a brand-new Arkansas program, which would need the state's Division of Higher Education, its home board's approval and national accreditation. Part 123 covers APRN programs by way of national accreditation, known as deemed status. A student arriving for a practicum alone falls between the two, and board staff were not asked to confirm this.
The Nurse Practice Act lets students in ASBN-approved programs practice without a license when the work is part of their studies. You already hold an RN license, so your own Arkansas or multistate license is what you practice under. The state authorization page explains UNCW's SARA status.
Practice rules and the Arkansas landscape
AANP groups Arkansas with the reduced practice states. At least one part of an NP's practice sits under a regulated physician agreement, and some drugs can be prescribed only under a physician protocol. No state preceptor incentive program was identified.
Baptist Health and CHI St. Vincent are Little Rock systems, UAMS Health is the academic system of the state's medical sciences university, Arkansas Children's is a major employer, and Mercy runs hospitals in Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas. Central Arkansas's metro, built around Little Rock, North Little Rock and Conway, held about 778,000 people in 2025, with Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers next, then Fort Smith and Jonesboro. Read these as examples of educator and leadership settings, not UNCW sites.
Nurse practitioner tracks run through North Carolina
UNCW draws a firm line here. Under the 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook, an Arkansan in the family, adult-gerontology or psychiatric NP track earns clinical time only at North Carolina sites, supervised by clinicians who work or hold licenses there, and the PMHNP post-doctoral certificate shares the psychiatric practica. An Arkansas multistate license covers the license requirement; the long trips east, the lodging and the unpaid travel time are the real planning work. Questions UNCW students ask
Can Arkansas nurses enroll in UNCW's online MSN Nurse Educator?
Yes. UNCW accepts a compact license from the state where you legally reside, and Arkansas has issued multistate licenses since 2018. The practicum can then happen at an Arkansas educational site with a preceptor licensed for that site, once UNCW has approved it and the agreement is signed, which must happen five weeks or more ahead of the opening practicum course.
Is Arkansas board approval needed before a UNCW practicum there?
Nothing in the board's rules that research found calls for it. The prelicensure standards target schools opening new Arkansas programs, and a practicum-only visit is not addressed. ASBN staff did not confirm this reading, so run your plan past UNCW's state authorization office first.
Can I complete UNCW AGPCNP clinicals in Little Rock?
No. UNCW's DNP Student Handbook requires AGPCNP, FNP and PMHNP clinical hours in North Carolina, and the AGPCNP preceptor page asks for NPs, physicians or PAs within North Carolina. Hours logged in Arkansas, however strong the site, fall outside what a UNCW practicum can accept.
Where would an Arkansas nurse complete the Nurse Executive Leadership DNP project?
Wherever your license is, per UNCW's admission wording, so Arkansas for an Arkansas nurse. UNCW's clinical overview says most leadership doctoral students complete immersion hours at their place of work, backed by a signed letter between UNCW and the employer, with nobody assigned as preceptor. An Arkansas hospital, clinic or agency where you already lead could fit, once UNCW approves it.
