A Delaware guide to UNC Wilmington's nursing programs
Delaware nurses can study online with UNC Wilmington and keep the practice side of an educator, RN-BSN or leadership program in Delaware. The catch is paperwork: Delaware's Board expects notice and documents from any outside program before students set foot in a Delaware clinical facility, and whether UNCW has filed is unknown. NP clinicals follow a separate rule, with every hour in North Carolina.

Wilmington, North Carolina, not Wilmington, Delaware
The name trips people up in Delaware more than anywhere else. UNCW is the University of North Carolina Wilmington, whose School of Nursing sits in McNeill Hall in the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. Delaware's Wilmington belongs to the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro, home to about 588,000 Delawareans, and Nemours Children's Health runs its Delaware hospital there.
Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware, is a different school altogether. It appears on some out-of-state approval lists, including Washington's and California's, and those entries say nothing about UNCW.
Delaware's paperwork rule for outside programs
Delaware writes one set of nursing school standards for every program type, with no separate track for pre-licensure, RN-BSN or graduate study (24 Del. Admin. Code 1900-2.0). An out-of-state school has to alert the Board ahead of placing anyone in a Delaware facility, then send in:
- evidence that its home-state board, or a national accreditor, has approved it
- signed contracts covering every agency where students will train
- the program's rules for who may teach or precept
- which faculty and which preceptors will be at which site
- copies of each of those people's Delaware or multistate licenses
The Board also approves each facility before students are assigned and may send representatives to visit. No public list shows which outside programs have filed, so UNCW's status is unknown. The rule could reach an educator practicum in a Delaware hospital, an RN-BSN practice experience or a DNP project; whether it covers a classroom-only practicum is not stated. Ask UNCW's State Authorization contacts before you enroll.

Compacts, practice authority and Delaware employers
Delaware has enacted both nursing compacts. The Nurse Licensure Compact took effect for Delaware on January 19, 2018, and the APRN Compact followed into state law in August 2021. Only five states, Delaware among them, have enacted that second compact, and it stays dormant until seven do. AANP rates Delaware full practice.
Delaware's minimum for a preceptor is a valid license plus a BSN, and when an online program's instructor or preceptor works inside a Delaware facility, that person must be licensed at or beyond the student's target level. UNCW asks more of an educator preceptor: graduate preparation at the master's level or beyond, plus three years in a teaching role, as the nurse educator practicum page explains.
ChristianaCare, Bayhealth, Beebe Healthcare and Nemours are the state's leading systems, with the Dover and Seaford areas covering central and southern Delaware. Each would first need UNCW's sign-off and a signed agreement before hosting a project or practicum.
Nurse practitioner concentrations: a North Carolina commitment
Picking FNP, AGPCNP or PMHNP means committing to North Carolina for clinicals. UNCW's DNP handbook counts no practicum hour logged outside the state, and preceptors must practice there. Is UNC Wilmington the same school as Wilmington University in Delaware?
No. UNC Wilmington, or UNCW, is a public university in Wilmington, North Carolina. Wilmington University is its own institution, headquartered in New Castle, Delaware. When a state board's approval list shows Wilmington University, it refers to the Delaware school, so check the city before drawing any conclusion about UNCW.
Has UNCW filed Delaware's notice for out-of-state programs?
That could not be confirmed, because Delaware posts no public list of outside programs that have notified the Board. The filing would include agreements, preceptor names and license copies, so it is UNCW's to make. Ask UNCW's State Authorization office before you plan a Delaware practicum or project.
Is a Delaware multistate license enough for UNCW's NP admission?
Yes. Delaware issues multistate licenses to its residents, and UNCW's NP admission wording allows either a North Carolina license or a compact one. Hold on to it in good standing, because the clinical hours themselves must be completed in North Carolina.
Does Delaware's APRN Compact membership help a Post APRN student?
Not yet. Delaware is one of five states that enacted the APRN Compact, which needs seven before it operates. UNCW's Post APRN DNP looks for APRN licensure or approval where you reside, and it places the DNP project in your state of licensure.
