Idaho nurses and UNC Wilmington: programs, licenses, practicums
Idaho's nursing rules are nearly silent on programs from outside the state that want to place students in Idaho, and the Board fields those questions one school at a time. If you are in one of the online programs that can place outside North Carolina (the educator MSN or certificate, the RN-BSN, or a leadership DNP), a practicum near Boise or Coeur d'Alene is possible in principle but worth confirming first. NP students have a fixed answer: every clinical hour is completed in North Carolina.

Idaho's rules leave the out-of-state question open
Two Idaho texts govern nursing program approval, a Board rule (IDAPA 24.34.01, section 150) and a statute (section 54-1406 of the Idaho Code), and both concern education delivered in Idaho. Neither speaks to a school from another state sending students in. The Board, part of Idaho's Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, fills the gap case by case: its web page points schools located elsewhere to a licensing inbox for questions on requirements or approval.
No list of out-of-state programs cleared for Idaho turned up, so UNCW's standing there is simply unknown. Get UNCW's State Authorization office to confirm it in writing before enrolling. The state authorization guide shows what UNCW publishes.
Idaho rules that touch students and preceptors
- Student exemption: Idaho Code 54-1412 exempts students in approved programs from licensure while they perform functions incident to their formal instruction.
- APRN students: under IDAPA 24.34.01.100, a matriculated student in a nationally accredited APRN program may do APRN-level work the curriculum requires, as long as the student holds an Idaho RN license or compact privilege.
- Preceptor level: Board policy adopted April 10, 2024 wants every clinical preceptor's license to match or exceed the credential the student is working toward.
- Faculty: anyone teaching a nursing course needs a current, unencumbered Idaho RN license, and APRN role and population courses call for an Idaho APRN license.
Idaho has issued compact licenses from January 2018 onward. APRN Compact legislation has not passed there, and AANP gives Idaho its full practice rating.
Boise, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls
Boise City is by far the largest metro, with Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls much smaller. In southern Idaho the leading systems are St. Luke's and Saint Alphonsus, while Kootenai Health serves Coeur d'Alene in the north. They illustrate the kind of employer an Idaho educator or RN-BSN student might approach, not places tied to UNCW.
Leadership DNP students often need no new site at all. By UNCW's account, the typical Post APRN or executive leadership student earns immersion hours in their current job, after the employer and the university sign a letter of agreement. The Post APRN DNP guide covers the project and its hours.
One rule for Idaho NP students
Idaho cannot host a single UNCW NP clinical hour: the 2025-26 DNP Student Handbook sends the family, adult-gerontology and psychiatric NP tracks to North Carolina sites and North Carolina preceptors. Your Idaho multistate license satisfies the license side; the real planning is travel and housing for each practicum, which are yours, along with trips to Wilmington for orientation and intensives. Does Idaho have to approve UNCW before my practicum?
Idaho's written rules leave that open for schools based elsewhere. The Board's page directs out-of-state programs to its licensing staff by email for requirements or approval, and no public list of cleared programs exists. Ask UNCW to confirm how an Idaho practicum, practice experience or DNP project would be handled.
Can I use my Idaho compact license for UNCW NP clinicals?
Yes, for the license requirement. UNCW's NP admission rule is satisfied by a multistate license from a compact state, and Idaho issues those, so a multistate license held while Idaho is your primary residence lets you practice in North Carolina. The clinical hours themselves must still be done at North Carolina sites.
Who can precept my UNCW nurse educator practicum in Idaho?
On UNCW's side, the educator preceptor works at the practicum site, holds an Idaho license for a site in Idaho, has a master's degree or above, and brings three or more years of teaching. Idaho's education policy adds that a clinical preceptor's license must match or exceed the credential you are working toward, so confirm the fit with UNCW.
Can I do the UNCW Post APRN DNP project at my Idaho clinic?
UNCW's admission wording ties the Post APRN project to the state that licenses you as an RN and as an APRN, and many students base it at their own practice under a letter of agreement. An Idaho multistate RN license meets UNCW's RN wording. Check with UNCW how Idaho's rules treat the project before you start.
