Ohio and UNC Wilmington: what stays local, what moves south
Ohio is one of the smoother states for UNCW's online programs. Its nursing law sets no approval step for programs based elsewhere, and Ohio nurses have held multistate licenses since 2023. The exception is the nurse practitioner track, whose clinicals all take place in North Carolina.

Which UNCW programs work from Ohio?
All of them can be studied from an Ohio address. What changes from one program to the next is where the practicum, practice experience or project happens.

Does Ohio make UNCW apply first?
Nothing in the Ohio Revised Code asks a program from another state to register with, or notify, the Ohio Board of Nursing before its students train in Ohio. Section 4723.32 handles visiting students through exemptions: one for pre-licensure students from programs another NCSBN member board approves, and one for APRN students working under an APRN from their own program, whether faculty or preceptor. The APRN exemption has little bearing on UNCW, since its NP students train in North Carolina.
Ohio's higher education department was outside the research behind this page. UNCW's SARA approval dates to February 8, 2017, and every state but California belongs to SARA, so ask UNCW's state authorization office to confirm nothing more is needed before you enroll. Your Ohio license and UNCW's rules
The compact took effect in Ohio on January 1, 2023. A multistate license that Ohio issues as your home state is the kind of compact license UNCW's DNP admission pages accept, and the Ohio board keeps track of nurses who work in Ohio on other states' multistate licenses. The separate APRN Compact is not enacted.
For the MSN Nurse Educator and the certificate, an Ohio license qualifies two ways: as a compact license from your state of residence, or through UNCW's distance-student route, meant for nurses who stay out of North Carolina practice during school. The RN-BSN expects your resident-state RN license to be active and unencumbered. Details sit on the license page.
Settings for an Ohio practicum or project
Educator and leadership DNP students in Ohio have a deep field of employers. In Columbus there are OhioHealth and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center; Cleveland has both Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals; Bon Secours Mercy Health is based in Cincinnati. Dayton rounds out the four largest metros. Naming them shows the kinds of settings available, not arrangements with UNCW.
Post APRN students hold APRN authorization where they live, so Ohio's scope matters to them. The AANP rates Ohio reduced practice: Ohio NPs practice under a career-long standard care arrangement, the collaborator being a physician or podiatrist, and Schedule II prescribing has setting limits. No Ohio preceptor incentive program was found.
For NP students living in Ohio
Coursework in UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP concentrations happens online wherever you are; the practicums do not. UNCW counts clinical hours only when they are earned on North Carolina soil under preceptors who practice in the state; Ohio residents therefore plan each practicum semester around a North Carolina stay, paying their own way, with no credit for travel time. Questions UNCW students ask
Can I complete UNCW nurse practitioner clinicals in Ohio?
No. UNCW limits clinical hours in its FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP concentrations, and in the PMHNP Post-Doctoral Certificate, to North Carolina, with preceptors who practice there. Ohio residents can take the online courses from home and travel to North Carolina for each practicum semester.
Must UNCW get Ohio board approval for my practicum?
The research turned up no Ohio board step, approval or notice, for programs based in other states. Ohio law handles visiting students through exemptions in section 4723.32 instead. The Ohio Department of Higher Education was not checked, so a quick check with UNCW's state authorization office is wise before an Ohio practicum is locked in.
Is an Ohio license a compact license for UNCW's DNP admission rule?
Yes, as long as it is a multistate license. Ohio's compact membership began January 1, 2023, and a compact license is one of the two license types UNCW's DNP admission pages name, the other being North Carolina's. The multistate privilege holds only while Ohio is where you legally reside.
Can my MSN Nurse Educator practicum be at my Ohio hospital?
Yes, provided the person precepting you qualifies under UNCW's rules: licensed for the state where the site sits, holding at least a master's, with three or more years of teaching, and employed at your hospital. Plan on that one hospital hosting both practicum courses, with approval and a signed agreement in hand five weeks or more ahead of the first.
