A Michigan RN license is single-state: Michigan remains outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, while UNCW's DNP admission rules are written around a North Carolina or compact license. Start with your license
For the FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP concentrations, UNCW asks applicants to hold an RN license from North Carolina or from a compact state, and it wants students licensed to practice in North Carolina when clinicals begin. A Michigan license by itself meets neither, so plan on adding a North Carolina RN license. Michigan's compact bill, HB 4246, was still listed as pending during the research for this page.
Both leadership DNPs, Post APRN and Nurse Executive Leadership, use the same license wording, then site the DNP project wherever you hold your license. UNCW has not published how it reads that pairing for a nurse licensed only in Michigan, so ask before you apply. The MSN Nurse Educator and its certificate are clearer: nurses studying at a distance, and not practicing in North Carolina meanwhile, may enroll on the license their home state issued. Michigan's board, practice rules and preceptor programs
No Michigan Board of Nursing rule surfaced that requires a school from another state to ask permission, or even give a heads-up, before one of its students trains in Michigan. The board's approval rules, beginning at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301, govern programs located in Michigan, and for licensure it accepts accreditation from ACEN, CNEA or CCNE in place of its own approval. Nobody put the question to the board directly, so confirm with UNCW's state authorization office.
The AANP places Michigan in its restricted category, because an NP's controlled-substance prescribing depends on physician delegation. To be certified as an NP specialist in Michigan, a nurse needs national certification layered on a current Michigan RN license, the authorization a Post APRN student living there would hold. An MDHHS preceptor pilot, run with the MSU College of Nursing, has ended and served only MSU students, and no Michigan preceptor tax credit was found.
Where a Michigan practicum or project could be based
Educator practicums and leadership projects in Michigan have plenty of possible homes, from Flint and Lansing to Grand Rapids and metro Detroit. The largest employers include McLaren Health Care, Trinity Health Michigan, Corewell Health, Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health) and Henry Ford Health. Coursework in the NP concentrations is online; the clinicals are not portable. UNCW recognizes them only when a North Carolina clinician precepts them inside the state, as the clinical rule page explains. From Michigan, each practicum term means a long relocation or commute at your own expense, and UNCW has no published policy for students who move states mid-program.

Is a Michigan RN license enough to start UNCW's FNP concentration?
UNCW's FNP, AGPCNP and PMHNP admission pages name two acceptable licenses, North Carolina's own or a multistate compact license, and Michigan issues neither. Expect to add a North Carolina RN license, since UNCW places all NP clinicals in North Carolina and wants students licensed there when those clinicals start.
Is Michigan part of the Nurse Licensure Compact?
No. Michigan is not a member, though a compact bill, HB 4246, was listed as pending. A Michigan RN license therefore carries no multistate privilege, nor does an out-of-state multistate license give practice rights in Michigan. Check the NCSBN compact map for current status before you plan around it.
Does Michigan require UNCW to register before my practicum there?
No Michigan Board of Nursing rule requiring approval or notice from out-of-state programs was found; its program rules cover Michigan-based schools. The board was not contacted, though, so run the question past UNCW's state authorization office before settling on a Michigan site or project.
Can I complete UNCW's MSN Nurse Educator from Michigan?
Yes. UNCW's MSN takes distance learners on a license from their primary state of residence, provided they are not working as nurses in North Carolina during the program. For the practicum, look for a Michigan nurse educator with a graduate degree, at least three years in teaching, a license valid at the site, and a position there.
