UNCW DNP Nurse Executive Leadership: the practice hours behind a leadership doctorate
UNCW's Nurse Executive Leadership concentration is a 36-credit online DNP for nurses heading into senior leadership. In place of clinical practica, you complete immersion hours on a DNP project, in the state where your RN license sits, until you reach 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours. No preceptor is assigned, so you arrange the site and the executive who backs your project, and we help you do that well.

What the concentration covers
Twelve 3-credit courses make up the 36. Five are executive courses found only in this concentration, four come from the shared DNP core, and three form the project sequence. The NEL plan of study labels the later project courses NSG 697L and NSG 698L and prints NSG 674 as "NGS 674"; the catalog numbers above are the ones to use.
Classes are online. UNCW's application refers to on-campus orientation and intensives as each concentration indicates, and the DNP Student Handbook's NEL requirements name only the New Student Orientation, so ask the program what applies to your cohort.

1,000 hours, and when you owe more
The catalog requirement is 1,000 post-baccalaureate practice hours. Practicum hours from your master's count toward it, and a student whose master's practicum came to fewer than 500 hours has to complete additional hours during the DNP. The DNP Student Handbook describes the split as up to 500 master's hours plus at least 500 immersion hours in the doctorate.
The Fall 2025 immersion handbook sets a higher bar for this concentration: its course table lists 785 expected immersion hours for NEL students, well above the 500 minimum. Settle the target for your cohort with your advisor before you build a logging plan, and see the 1,000-hour breakdown for how the DNP rule works across concentrations.
Pull the practicum hours from your master's records early. That number tells you, and UNCW, how much you bring in and how much immersion time the doctorate has to supply.
Immersion hours with no assigned preceptor
NEL immersion hours are not patient care, and UNCW assigns no preceptor for them. The handbook is plain that course faculty and your advisor can help, but identifying, obtaining and accurately logging the remaining hours is your responsibility.
Most leadership students do this work inside their own organization, in a healthcare systems leadership role. Your organization and UNCW sign a Letter of Agreement, and once faculty and the organization approve the plan, you submit the project intent paperwork and a supporting letter from the site. Every hour goes into Typhon within 5 days, and hours worked while UNCW's campus is closed are excluded wherever you are. For a sense of pace, the immersion handbook converts credit to effort at one credit hour for four hours of activity per week, so a 3-credit project course carries a steady weekly commitment on top of your job.
Travel time to a project site does not count as immersion time, even when the drive is long. Plan your hours around the work done at the site.
Timeline from application to project
With rolling review, files are read as they arrive, so an early application gives you more time to plan. Because the site form is due in the first week of NSGL 696, the conversation with a host organization belongs in your first two semesters. The DNP project courses page walks through each course.
The degree closes with a written and oral comprehensive examination of your DNP project. Grades matter throughout: UNCW expects a B or better in every course and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and a second C ends a DNP student's enrollment.

Where your project can happen
For NEL admission, UNCW asks for an RN license from North Carolina or a compact state, and the project runs in the state that licensed you. This is a looser rule than the North Carolina-only requirement on UNCW's nurse practitioner tracks, so a nurse leader licensed outside North Carolina can often complete the project close to home. The DNP Student Handbook's examples of project settings range from a current place of employment to post-graduation employment settings and rural Native American reservations.
If your employer is not the right setting for your project, you can identify another agency and a liaison there, and UNCW will set up an affiliation agreement when the agency asks for one. When your master's practicum left you short of 500 hours, we help you line up leadership settings where the extra immersion work fits the project. Then we gather what UNCW's forms call for, including the organization's legal name and address, your site champion's details and the agreement contact, so project faculty receive a complete file early, with the host organization confirmed before the site approval form is due in the first week of NSGL 696. Questions UNCW students ask
Is UNCW's Nurse Executive Leadership DNP online?
Yes, the courses are online. UNCW requires the DNP New Student Orientation, and its application portal mentions on-campus orientation and intensives as each concentration indicates, while the DNP Student Handbook lists only the orientation for NEL. Your immersion hours happen in person at a project site in the state where you are licensed.
Do I need an APRN license for the NEL DNP?
No. On licensure, the NEL admission wording names a valid North Carolina or compact RN license, linked to carrying out the project in your licensed state. Unlike the Post APRN concentration, it does not list an APRN license, national APRN certification or current advanced practice employment among its requirements.
How many semesters is the UNCW NEL DNP?
Full-time students can finish in five semesters at the fastest; the part-time schedule stretches to eight. Summers are part of both plans: full-time students take the first project course, NSGL 696, in the summer of their first year. The DNP Student Handbook gives students six years to finish.
Can my employer be my DNP project site?
In most cases, yes. UNCW's immersion handbook says most leadership students complete immersion hours where they work as healthcare systems leaders, and the DNP Student Handbook lists a current place of employment as a possible project site. A signed Letter of Agreement and project faculty approval come first, and only then do the hours count.
Who approves my NEL project site?
Several people do. Project faculty shape the choice, course faculty review the site you send in by DocuSign, and a site champion inside the organization signs for it. If the organization asks for a formal affiliation agreement, UNCW's CHHS Applied Learning Operations Coordinator handles it for the university.
